Today, we’re taking a look at Crash Landing on You Episode 1, the hit Korean drama starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin.

The episode opens with stunning aerial shots of the Korean Peninsula, showing both sides of the divided nation. As the camera follows an eagle soaring through the sky, the story eventually brings us to Seoul, where we meet the drama’s female lead.

Yoon Se-ri’s Life as a Successful CEO

Yoon Se-ri (played by Son Ye-jin) is a famous fashion CEO and one of South Korea’s most successful businesswomen. She is photographed alongside a man, prompting her PR team to discuss the possible impact the photos could have on her public image.

As Se-ri leaves the building, she receives a call from her older brother, Yoon Se-hyung (played by Park Hyoung-soo). He informs her that their father has just been released from prison.

The story then shifts to Chairman Yoon’s residence, where the family gathers for dinner. Chairman Yoon sits with his two sons and their wives as they celebrate his return.

During dinner, the two brothers argue over who deserves to inherit the family business. Frustrated by the discussion, Chairman Yoon asks where Se-ri is and demands to know why she hasn’t arrived yet.

Not long afterward, Se-ri finally shows up to greet her father. However, she makes it clear that she has no intention of staying and is preparing to leave.

Chairman Yoon Chooses His Successor

Before Se-ri can walk away, Chairman Yoon stops her and reveals something unexpected. He tells Se-ri that he wants her to take over the company. According to Chairman Yoon, he has been watching her achievements closely for the past ten years and believes she is the most capable person to lead the business.

Se-ri accepts the offer.

The announcement immediately upsets her two brothers, who clearly expected to inherit the company themselves. Adding fuel to the fire, Se-ri openly states that she plans to make major changes within the organization. She hints that several CEOs have performed poorly and will likely be replaced.

The comment is a thinly veiled jab at her brothers and their disappointing track records.

A Paragliding Trip Takes a Dangerous Turn

The following day, Se-ri decides to spend some time paragliding, one of her favorite hobbies.

Everything seems perfectly normal at first. She enjoys the flight and takes in the scenery from above. Then disaster strikes.

Without warning, a powerful tornado-like windstorm appears and throws Se-ri completely off course. Unable to control her paraglider, she is swept far away from her intended route.

At the same time, the story introduces Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok (played by Hyun Bin) in North Korea.

Jeong-hyeok is leading a military patrol near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). During their operation, his unit encounters South Korean soldiers after capturing a group of smugglers.

Tension rises as both sides face one another.

For a brief moment, it looks as though the situation could escalate into a confrontation. However, both groups suddenly receive orders to withdraw.

The North Korean soldiers take custody of the smugglers and leave the area.

Suspicious Orders From Above

Back at the border, Jeong-hyeok reports the incident to his superior officer. Based on his findings, he believes the captured criminals should be punished. His superior, however, responds differently.

The officer explains that permission has already been granted by the State Security Department, meaning the prisoners must be treated leniently.

The answer doesn’t sit well with Jeong-hyeok, who clearly suspects that something unusual is going on behind the scenes.

The next morning, Se-ri regains consciousness.

To her horror, she discovers that she is hanging from a tree, suspended by her paragliding equipment. As she looks down, she realizes just how high above the ground she is. Her cries for help quickly attract attention.

Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok soon arrives at the scene and discovers the stranded woman. Se-ri frees herself from the parachute lines and jumps toward him.

Their first meeting is anything but ordinary.

Jeong-hyeok immediately informs Se-ri that she has accidentally crossed the border and landed in North Korea. According to military regulations, she must be taken in for questioning.

Se-ri refuses to believe what she’s hearing.

Convinced that she can simply run back to South Korea, she ignores Jeong-hyeok’s warnings and takes off.

Unfortunately, Jeong-hyeok suddenly steps on a landmine. Unable to move without triggering an explosion, he has no choice but to let Se-ri continue running.

As other soldiers arrive to help him, Jeong-hyeok instructs them to report that a South Korean woman has accidentally crossed the border.

His warning quickly spreads through the military.

A Desperate Escape Attempt

Members of the Sixth Unit soon locate Se-ri and begin chasing her. The pursuit comes to an abrupt stop when they realize she has entered a minefield. None of the soldiers dare follow her. Miraculously, Se-ri manages to make it through the dangerous area alive.

After escaping the minefield, she continues running for miles. She climbs over barbed-wire fences and desperately searches for any route that might lead her back to South Korea.

At the same time, news of her disappearance reaches Seoul.

Back in South Korea, Se-ri’s family learns that she has gone missing.

Rather than showing concern, her brothers and their wives appear surprisingly pleased. A flashback to the family dinner reveals why.

Before Se-ri accepted her father’s offer, her mother privately urged her to reject the position and leave the family business behind.

The tension within the family runs much deeper than it initially appeared.

In the present day, Se-hyung’s wife reminds her husband not to waste a valuable opportunity.

She is still searching for Koo Seung-jun (played by Kim Jung-hyun), a man who disappeared after taking her money.

Koo Seung-jun Hides in China

The story briefly shifts to China.

Koo Seung-jun meets with Mr. Oh and discusses his efforts to stay hidden from Se-hyung and his wife. Seung-jun wonders whether they will be able to track him down easily.

Mr. Oh suggests several alternative places where he could hide and avoid being discovered.

Although his role seems separate from the main storyline for now, the episode hints that Seung-jun will become important later.

Meanwhile, Jeong-hyeok’s superior officer meets with the three captured smugglers. Shortly afterward, the men are loaded into a truck.

What happens next is horrifying. The truck is deliberately forced off the road and sent plunging into a ravine.

Moments later, it explodes. The entire incident appears to be an execution disguised as an accident.

A nearby woman witnesses everything, suggesting that this event could have major consequences later in the story.

After walking for countless miles, Se-ri finally spots a village in the distance. Relieved, she believes she has successfully returned to South Korea. For a brief moment, hope returns.

However, as she gets closer, she notices that something feels off.

The villagers follow highly structured daily routines, and their way of life looks very different from what she is used to.

As morning announcements echo through the village and residents begin their day in strict order, reality finally sinks in.

Se-ri realizes she is still in North Korea. And there is no easy way home.

Episode 1 Ending

As military leaders continue moving through the area by car, Se-ri is left facing a reality she never imagined. What began as a simple paragliding trip has turned into an international crisis.

She is trapped inside one of the most heavily guarded countries in the world, completely cut off from her family and everything she knows.

At the same time, Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok finds himself caught between military duty and an increasingly complicated situation involving a South Korean civilian.

Episode 1 sets up the central premise of Crash Landing on You perfectly, combining romance, suspense, political tension, and fish-out-of-water comedy. The accidental meeting between Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok creates the foundation for one of the most beloved K-drama love stories in recent years, while the mysterious deaths and family conflicts add plenty of intrigue for the episodes ahead.
