The second episode of Doctor on the Edge wastes no time pushing Ji Ui and Ha-ri back into each other’s orbit. What starts as another awkward encounter soon turns into something much bigger as Ha-ri officially joins the island health center and becomes involved in some of Ji Ui’s toughest cases yet.
The episode opens near the seaside before returning to the aftermath of the previous events. Ha-ri gives Ji Ui his headphones, but they have already run out of battery. Hoping to lighten the mood, she offers him a piece of candy and casually mentions that he kept saying the name “Seonu” while unconscious.
The comment immediately changes Ji Ui’s expression.
He doesn’t appreciate her curiosity and accuses her of crossing a personal boundary. Frustrated, he leaves and heads to a friend’s clinic to get medicine.
When he returns to the health center, he claims he simply fell asleep on the ferry. Once alone, he throws away both the candy Ha-ri gave him and the medication he brought back.
The following day, Lee Jang-su arrives carrying bellflower roots from the local youth group as a thank-you gift for saving the village chief. He also comes to collect medicine that he usually shares with his wife.
Ji Ui isn’t willing to continue that arrangement.
After listening to Jang-su’s symptoms, he worries that the man’s cough could become something more serious. Instead of giving him the medication he expects, Ji Ui prescribes only a few days’ worth and asks him to return for another examination.
Jang-su takes the decision badly.
Rather than accepting the doctor’s judgment, he files a complaint with the county office, accusing Ji Ui of improper conduct.
Miss Hwang later advises Ji Ui to adapt to local customs and simply give residents what they want. Ji Ui remains firm and refuses to change his approach.
Not long afterward, the village chief visits the health center with monkfish liver as a gift. Jucheon is thrilled by the gesture and sees it as proof that Ji Ui is finally earning the chief’s trust.
Meanwhile, another small moment hints at a mystery when Jucheon opens a package containing slippers that look remarkably similar to Nurse Eom’s. Nurse Eom appears uncomfortable and quickly leaves.
That evening, Ji Ui finds himself unable to sleep because he’s hungry. A discussion in the staff group chat about the island’s limited convenience stores inspires him to head out in search of beer.
There, he runs into Ha-ri again.
Their argument picks up right where it left off. During the exchange, Ji Ui trips over a boundary rope. He catches Ha-ri but then reminds her that she crossed a line before letting go.
Then comes a revelation that surprises everyone. Ha-ri is the newest nurse assigned to the health center.
Nurse Eom immediately establishes workplace hierarchy by reminding Ha-ri that she’s one year older. During introductions, everyone learns that Ha-ri worked as an emergency room nurse at Ansong Hospital and has visited the island many times before.
The staff is especially surprised to discover that she already knows Ji Ui. Chiyeon, on the other hand, looks genuinely happy to see her.
Later, Nurse Eom asks why she left the city. Ha-ri explains that she wanted some time away from her previous environment. Nurse Eom quickly jokes that the health center is hardly a peaceful place and sends her out on an errand.
Soon afterward, Ji Ui receives a home-visit assignment involving a cancer patient named Kim Jeong-bae who has become unreachable. Ha-ri is assigned to accompany him.
At the ferry terminal, Ji Ui’s fear becomes obvious as he struggles with the metal boarding bridge. Before they depart, the boat driver warns them that Jeong-bae dislikes visitors and rarely welcomes anyone into his home.
The trip gets even more uncomfortable when a venomous spider lands on Ji Ui and crawls inside his clothing.
Ha-ri hesitates for a moment, but Ji Ui asks for help. She carefully removes the spider and releases it outside.
When they arrive at Jeong-bae’s house, nobody appears to be home. Eventually, the patient emerges and completely ignores them while going about his routine.
Ji Ui decides they should leave. Ha-ri disagrees. Instead of backing down, she confronts Jeong-bae directly. The situation escalates quickly, and the man eventually threatens them, forcing Ji Ui to pull her away.
By the time they begin heading back, darkness has fallen.
Ha-ri remains upset by Jeong-bae’s refusal to seek help. During their discussion, Ji Ui notices the medication she is carrying and begins thinking about another way to approach the situation.
Unfortunately, they soon realize they have lost their way.
The scenes that follow reveal more of Ji Ui’s fears. He is clearly uncomfortable with the darkness and the surrounding wildlife.
Thankfully, Chiyeon arrives to help.
Since there is only room for one passenger, he takes Ha-ri first and promises another ride for Ji Ui.
During the drive, Chiyeon recalls the first time he met Ha-ri. The memory reveals a misunderstanding in which she assumed he wanted her phone number, while his intentions were completely different.
When they arrive at a local restaurant, they discover Ji Ui has somehow arrived before them thanks to a ride from an elderly woman.
The gathering soon turns lively when Jang-su challenges Ji Ui to a drinking contest. According to local tradition, the outcome will determine who is considered senior and junior.
Ji Ui accepts the challenge.
The competition stretches on through multiple rounds, but eventually Jang-su loses. A brief flashback reveals that he once won a similar contest years earlier.
The celebration quickly takes a turn when Jang-su injures his hand after striking a mirror in the restroom.
Ji Ui cleans and evaluates the injury but refuses to perform a procedure while alcohol is still in Jang-su’s system. Since Jang-su refuses hospital treatment because of upcoming anchovy fishing work, Ji Ui decides to wait until the next day.
Chiyeon worries that the decision may create problems.
The following morning, after resting in the waiting room, Ji Ui completes the procedure with Ha-ri assisting him. While working, Ha-ri asks whether Jang-su annoys him. Ji Ui admits that he does.
Still, he insists that a patient remains a patient regardless of personal feelings.
I thought that moment captured his character perfectly.
Predictably, Jang-su reacts dramatically once he wakes up and immediately threatens more complaints. The argument is interrupted by the village chief, who arrives carrying maeuntang as another gift.
Later, Ha-ri explains that Jang-su recently lost both a village election and his reputation as the island’s top drinker. She suspects embarrassment is behind much of his behavior.
Their conversation helps Ji Ui connect the dots regarding Jeong-bae’s situation. The pair return to visit him. This time, Jeong-bae reacts aggressively and throws a utensil that cuts Ha-ri’s leg. Despite the confrontation, they finally uncover the truth. Jeong-bae suffers from diabetes, and gangrene has already begun affecting his leg.
Ji Ui and Ha-ri urge him to undergo surgery immediately. He refuses. He also asks them not to contact his daughter. Ji Ui makes it clear that he disagrees.
As rain begins falling, Ha-ri spends additional time speaking with Jeong-bae. Whatever is said during that conversation leaves her deeply emotional.
Back at the health center, she invites Ji Ui to eat ramen together. Before they can enjoy a quiet evening, someone arrives unexpectedly.
It’s Jeong-bae. He has changed his mind and is now asking for help.
Later, a flashback reveals what convinced him. Ha-ri spoke honestly about the pain and loss his family would experience if he died. Her words finally reached him.
As they monitor his condition, Ji Ui reflects on the suffering patients carry and explains his belief that treatment is the best path forward.
He also takes care of the injury on Ha-ri’s leg.
Before the night ends, Ha-ri asks questions that Ji Ui clearly doesn’t want to answer. She wonders why he fears boats and why he reacts negatively whenever others try to help him.
Ji Ui stays silent. Ha-ri simply decides she’ll discover the truth herself.
The next day, they see Jeong-bae off as he leaves for treatment. He thanks both of them before departing. On the way back, Ji Ui casually remarks that they should have given him seasickness medicine. Ha-ri laughs off the suggestion since Jeong-bae spends his life working on boats.
Then the episode delivers one final surprise. The village chief suddenly arrives in his truck, dumps trash on Ji Ui, and angrily calls him a liar.
The screen cuts to black before any explanation is given.
Episode Review
Episode 2 does a solid job expanding both the island community and the central characters. Ha-ri’s arrival at the clinic immediately adds energy to nearly every scene, especially when she’s paired with Ji Ui.
The strongest storyline involves Kim Jeong-bae. His resistance to treatment creates tension throughout the episode, and the eventual breakthrough feels earned because of Ha-ri’s persistence.
I also enjoyed the small clues surrounding Ji Ui. His reaction to the name Seonu, his fear of boats, and his reluctance to accept help all hint at unresolved issues that haven’t been revealed yet.
The final scene is easily the biggest talking point. After spending much of the episode earning gratitude from the villagers, Ji Ui suddenly finds himself accused of being a liar by the chief himself. It’s a sharp ending that creates plenty of curiosity for the next episode.
While many questions remain unanswered, Episode 2 successfully deepens the characters and makes the island feel more alive than ever.
