A drunk confession at a cinema, a hand-holding attempt that can’t quite land, and a line from Joe that stops the whole episode cold: “this is exactly what Gordon was afraid of.” That’s the sentence that unravels everything in Sterling Point Season 1 Episode 4, and by the time the credits roll, the throwaway detail we’d all accepted about Annie and Ramona’s mother turns out to be a lie the whole family has been sitting on. I clocked the cliff jumping and the sauna scene as filler when they happened. I was wrong. Every beat in this episode was quietly loading the gun for that final reveal.
Connor’s Resort Dreams Hit a Wall
The episode opens with Connor doing what Connor does best: talking big. He runs through his plans to transform Sterling Point into a money-making resort, completely unmoved by Annie’s attempt to talk him out of it. Her pitch flops, and Connor doesn’t just brush it off, he goes for the jugular, telling his sister he can see exactly why she never got into business school. It’s a nasty little jab, and it sets the tone for how prickly this sibling relationship still is.
Rather than escalate the fight, Annie tries a different tactic. She asks Connor to stick around for a week, get a real feel for the island, and if he still wants out after that, they’ll talk about selling. Of course, this is a stall tactic dressed up as a compromise. Annie and the other women are quietly working together to keep Connor around as long as possible, and their opening move is a cliff jumping trip.
Ellis Finds His Nerve (And Ellis Loses His Nerve)
While the resort drama simmers, Gordon’s lawyer Marjorie Lewis calls looking for Joe and Ramona, but gets Ellis on the phone instead. Ellis is still stewing over Annie kissing Rory, and he ends up moping about it with Oona at the diner. She pushes him to stop wallowing and actually ask Annie out instead of quietly playing the long game as the nice guy waiting in the wings.
There’s a lot going on for Ellis this episode beyond his love life, too. He learns from Ramona that ownership of Sterling Point is genuinely up in the air, which rattles him given how much he cares about the island’s future. But right before the group heads off cliff jumping, Ellis finally works up the courage to ask Annie out, and she says yes.
Cliffside Chemistry and a Sauna Situation
The cliff jumping trip turns into one of the episode’s richer scenes, and not for the reason you’d expect. Connor and Ramona end up having a genuinely warm conversation about Oona, with Connor dishing out some surprisingly solid advice. It’s a nice beat for a character who’s mostly been comic chaos up to this point.
Meanwhile, Annie and Rory sneak off and get hot and heavy in the sauna, which, yeah, complicates the whole Ellis situation considerably. Ellis, oblivious to this for now, is off running his overcharging scheme, this time targeting Denise at Rory’s place. That particular subplot is about to catch up with him.
Ramona’s Confession and a Cinema Date on the Rocks
Oona invites Ramona to the cinema that night, and Ramona’s anxiety kicks in hard. She opens up about having zero self-confidence and not seeing herself as attractive, admitting she’s always suspected she’s gay but has never felt safe enough to say it out loud to anyone. Oona clearly already knows, and this cinema date is shaping up to be the moment things finally move forward for the two of them.
Back at the hot tub, the drama escalates. Denise tells Rory about Ellis’s rip-off scheme, and with Connor also lounging in the hot tub, the two men start talking about Ellis’s date with Annie, plus the idea of undercutting the girls by selling the island through Denise’s connections. That’s a lot of scheming happening in one hot tub. Once Rory hears about the date, he decides to head to the cinema himself to intercept Ellis, jealousy clearly driving the decision even if he won’t say it outright.
Back with Ellis, he’s still moping despite everything, though Sully steps in with some genuinely good advice about opening up and telling Annie how he actually feels. Rory, notably, isn’t so convinced that honesty is the way to go here, especially since misunderstandings tend to be baked into how these stories usually play out.
Before the cinema date, Ramona is nervous about seeing Oona, so Connor offers her alcohol to take the edge off. Given that Ramona has never had a drink before, this is exactly the kind of setup that tells you it’s about to go badly.
The Date, the Portraits, and the Jealousy Twist
Annie and Ellis’s date, on the other hand, actually goes really well. There’s undeniable chemistry between them, and one particularly sweet moment has Ellis awkwardly trying to hold Annie’s hand while they get their portraits done. It’s the kind of small, fumbling gesture that sells a relationship better than any grand declaration could. This time, the jealousy shoe is on the other foot: Rory shows up and watches the two of them together, clearly not thrilled about what he’s seeing.
Ramona, now drunk, has her own disaster unfolding. On her way to the bathroom, she spots Oona out with her date, Stacy Malorie, and immediately throws Oona under the bus, telling Stacy she’s nothing special and just the latest name in a long list of casual hookups. It’s a brutal, alcohol-fueled moment that blows up whatever was building between Oona and Stacy. Once Stacy leaves, Oona confronts Ramona and tells her flatly that she completely misread the situation, that the thigh-touching and the almost-kiss moments Ramona had been holding onto were nothing more than her own imagination.
At the same time, Rory shows up at the cinema with his friend Lincoln and crashes Ellis and Annie’s date. Ellis storms off, and Annie follows after him, only for the two of them to stumble across a very drunk Ramona. When they bring her home, Joe is furious with Annie for not keeping a closer eye on her sister. In the middle of his anger, he blurts out something heavier than a scolding: this is exactly the kind of situation Gordon was always afraid of.
And then the episode drops its biggest bomb yet. We learn that Annie and Ramona’s mother didn’t die of cancer, as we’d been led to believe. She died giving birth to Ramona, and Joe was there when it happened.
The Episode Review
That closing reveal is the kind of twist that makes you want to immediately rewatch the earlier episodes with new eyes. It’s a genuine turning point for the series, and it retroactively explains so much about Ramona’s fragile self-image and her struggle to open up to the people around her. It also finally gives context to Joe’s haunted, strained demeanor throughout the season. He hasn’t just been a grumpy patriarch keeping secrets for the sake of it; he’s been carrying something enormous.
Connor continues to be the most fun ingredient in this show’s mix. He’s an idiot, sure, and a bit of a chaos merchant, but that’s exactly what Sterling Point needed to balance out Annie’s talkative, always-scheming energy. His scene with Ramona at the cliffs is a nice reminder that there’s more to him than the money-hungry brother archetype he’s been playing so far.
As for the romantic tangle at the center of the show, the Rory-Ellis rivalry keeps getting more tangled with every episode, and I honestly can’t call which way Annie is going to lean. Ellis’s sweetness and awkward hand-holding moment made a strong case for him this episode, but Rory’s jealousy in the aftermath suggests he’s not going to back off quietly.
