What follows is a rough night for both of them. Annie cries, gets kicked out, and eventually is grudgingly allowed to sleep on the couch, though neither woman actually manages to get any real rest. Ramona has her own unopened letter from Gordon sitting somewhere in the mix, and she’s also fond of smoking weed, which, I’ll just say it, probably isn’t helping her paranoia about this stranger sleeping in her house. Annie, meanwhile, gets kept awake by a creepy clock downstairs that seems determined to make her stay even more uncomfortable.
By morning, Ramona has had enough. She tips Annie right off the sofa and forces her out of the house. Annie grabs her stuff and leaves, and in a decision that feels very “main character energy,” she heads down to the water and grabs a kayak to try to find her own way. It does not go well. She loses her oar. Then she loses her luggage. It’s a rough start to the day.
Rory to the Rescue (And a Phone Call That Changes Everything)
Thankfully, Rory shows up just in time to save Annie from her own kayaking disaster. He brings her back to his place, which turns out to have actual cell service, a small detail, but a big deal for Annie, who’s been cut off from the outside world. She immediately calls her brother Connor to break the news about Ramona, and she makes it clear she’s determined to dig into the truth about their family, no matter what it takes. There’s just one problem: she’s still lying to their father about where she actually is.
Before they hang up, Connor drops a bombshell of his own. Oliver, Annie’s now ex, has come out publicly as gay to everyone before even telling Annie directly. It’s framed as not exactly shocking, but it does make the breakup official. So on top of a newly discovered sister and a missing mother mystery, Annie’s now processing a very public, very awkward end to her relationship.
The Marina Gang Reacts to Ramona’s Return
Back at the dock, Ramona reappears in front of the group we met back in episode 1, and they’re clearly stunned to see her. It turns out Ramona used to work with Ellis, and everyone greets her warmly after her long absence. The reason she’s been gone becomes clear pretty quickly: she was the one taking care of Gordon by herself as he got sicker, right up until he passed away. That’s a heavy thing to carry alone, and it starts to reframe how prickly she’s been toward Annie.
Meanwhile, the Marina Gang is trying to figure out exactly who this Annie person is, though for now they just assume she’s renting a place nearby. The misunderstanding that’s driving this whole episode, Annie not simply explaining her situation to anyone, keeps stretching out, and it’s clearly not going away on its own.
Annie’s World Gets Turned Upside Down
Ramona eventually heads home to do some digging of her own, while Annie ends up back at Rory’s place for what turns into another party. Seriously, these guys throw parties like it’s their full-time job. It’s here that Annie learns everything she thought she knew about her mom is wrong, and Rory is the one who ends up comforting her down on the dock as she processes it.
Oona spots Annie at Rory’s place while she’s working in the kitchen, and after getting herself fired for waving a knife around (a genuinely wild detail I did not expect), she runs straight to Ramona with the gossip. Ellis, for her part, seems a little jealous watching Annie and Rory grow closer. And Ramona, still determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, finally confronts Annie right there at Rory’s place, on the dock, in front of everyone.
The Truth Comes Out: What Really Happened to Annie’s Mom
This is where the episode really turns. Ramona forces Annie into her boat, and the two finally get some space away from the crowd to hash things out honestly. Annie lays it all out: she and Connor were adopted as newborns by Steven and his new wife, and she grew up believing her biological mother died of cancer when she and Connor were just two years old. She had no idea Sterling Point even existed until Gordon died.
That cryptic letter mentioning Annie needing to “find her” apparently wasn’t just about her mother, it was also pointing toward Ramona. The catch is that Ramona had no idea about Annie’s existence either, and given the adoption, she flatly refuses to accept that they’re actually blood-related. She tells Annie to just go back to New York.
That night, Ellis catches up with Annie and gives her some context: Ramona has had a genuinely rough few years. But Annie’s still reeling from something else entirely, Denise’s revelation that her mother didn’t die of cancer at all, but had an affair and left when Annie was young. With that thread nowhere near resolved, Ellis encourages Annie to stick around Sterling Point rather than run.
Ramona Reads the Letter
In a quieter moment, Oona and Ramona sit down with that unopened letter from Gordon. Ramona finally decides to have Oona read it out loud, and the contents confirm everything Annie has been saying. It’s the turning point where Ramona starts to realize she and Annie might actually have a lot more in common than she wanted to admit.
The episode closes with Ramona tracking Annie down again that night. This time, out on the dock, she doesn’t send her away — she encourages Annie to come back to the house.
The Episode Review: A Frustrating Case of the Miscommunication Trope
Ah yes, the classic misunderstanding trope. It’s honestly been a while since I’ve seen a teen drama lean on this one so heavily, and I have to say, it’s more frustrating than compelling here. The entire first half of this episode could have been resolved in about five minutes if Annie had simply told Ramona the truth up front instead of dodging every opportunity to explain herself. I genuinely can’t figure out a real reason for her silence beyond “the plot needed more drama,” which is never a satisfying answer.
To be fair, Ramona probably would have pieced things together eventually once that letter came into play. But getting to that point was a slog, and it drags down what should have been a much more emotionally efficient hour of television.
Beyond the central misunderstanding, a lot of the supporting characters here feel pretty thin. The Marina Gang reads as your standard collection of quirky side characters, complete with the expected comedic bits and jokes that run on way too long, the extended gag about Ramona supposedly killing Annie is a good example of a joke that overstays its welcome by a wide margin.
If I’m being honest, Sterling Point needs to find its footing fast. Based on this episode alone, it’s not doing much to set itself apart from the pile of similar teen dramas already out there. The family-secret hook is solid, but the execution around it needs sharper writing and characters with a bit more personality if this show wants to hold onto viewers past the first couple of episodes.
