Episode 8 of Spooky in Love picks up the pace considerably after a slower start, and by the time the credits roll, it delivers one of the most emotionally loaded episodes of the series so far. Between a botched proposal, a shocking confession from Min-hwan, and Chairwoman Baek’s health scare, this installment moves several major pieces into place. Here’s everything that happened, followed by my full breakdown of what it all means going forward.
Ha-ri’s Suspicions Grow as Si-u’s Murder Rocks Reina
Spooky in Love Episode 8 opens with Gang-uk creating a diversion to keep Ha-ri distracted while he hides Yeo-ri from her. Not long after, police arrive on the scene and discover Si-u’s body, and his twin brother is arrested for the murder. This puts Ha-ri on high alert. She starts connecting dots that lead her to a troubling theory: that Yeo-ri might be using her strange ability to sense the dead as a way of finding bodies, the same way she did when Eun-ju died.
Gye-hee wastes no time capitalizing on this. She meets with Director Gong and presents him with a photo of Yeo-ri standing near Si-u’s corpse, framing it as a scandal that could damage Reina’s public image. Her real motive is obvious: she wants Gong to pressure the shareholders into ousting Yeo-ri from her CEO position. Ha-ri, still convinced something’s off, confronts Yeo-ri directly and even brings video evidence to Chairwoman Baek showing Yeo-ri near the body. Yeo-ri’s defense is that Gang-uk called her there specifically to identify Si-u. Ha-ri doesn’t buy it, but Yeo-ri shuts the conversation down and tells her to back off.
Chairwoman Baek Pushes for an Engagement, and Gang-uk Finally Confesses His Feelings
Sensing the walls closing in, Chairwoman Baek tells Yeo-ri to move quickly on getting engaged to Gang-uk. Yeo-ri is nervous about it, but she calls Gang-uk to meet her at Siena Hall, where she warns him that Gye-hee plans to tear the hall down if she takes control as CEO. Gang-uk doesn’t hesitate. He agrees to help her and commits to the engagement.
What follows is a genuinely sweet beat: Gang-uk admits he’s developed real feelings for Yeo-ri and tells her he likes her, and she’s visibly moved by it. But there’s a wrinkle hanging over the moment. Gang-uk can’t shake the memory of his grandmother’s old superstition about women born in the year of the black monkey, which happens to be Yeo-ri’s birth year.
To get around this, Gang-uk pulls a bit of a trick. He asks Pil-dong for his wife’s birth chart and passes it off to Madam Paeng as Yeo-ri’s. It works. Madam Paeng declares Yeo-ri the ideal match for her grandson and gives her blessing to the engagement. Pil-dong and Hyeong-min are uneasy about the lie unraveling eventually, but Gang-uk decides that’s a problem for future him.
The Family Dinner: Two Grandmothers, Two Very Different Stories
Chairwoman Baek asks to meet Gang-uk’s grandmother to get a better sense of his family background, setting up a dinner that’s as tense as it is telling. Meanwhile, back at Reina, Yeo-ri overhears the female staff gossiping about proposals, which sends her mind spinning with the possibility that Gang-uk might be planning one for her.
Before the dinner even starts, Madam Paeng and Chairwoman Baek run into each other without realizing who the other woman is, and end up trading opinions on what they each want for their grandchildren’s future spouses. Once Yeo-ri and Gang-uk arrive, the dinner kicks off with Madam Paeng praising Gang-uk’s academic record while Chairwoman Baek boasts about Yeo-ri’s career. Both Yeo-ri and Gang-uk make a point of promising to support each other’s professions in front of their grandparents.
The good vibes don’t last. Madam Paeng later finds out Gang-uk lied to her about what Yeo-ri actually does for a living, and she’s upset about it. Gang-uk levels with her, telling her plainly that he loves Yeo-ri and asking for her approval anyway. That night, he calls Yeo-ri and asks her out, and she immediately starts wondering if this is the night he’ll propose.
The Proposal That Wasn’t (Sort Of)
This is where the episode has some fun with expectations. Gang-uk and Yeo-ri go to dinner and take a walk through the park afterward. When Gang-uk suddenly bends down, Yeo-ri’s heart skips, thinking this is the moment. It’s not; he’s just tying his shoelace. She’s crushed with disappointment.
Then he actually does get down on one knee, box in hand. Except when he opens it, there are needles inside instead of a ring. Yeo-ri, mortified, walks off, and Gang-uk has to chase her down to explain that he genuinely meant to propose. That night, both of them stew over what happened. We even get a flashback of Gang-uk secretly practicing how to slide a ring onto Pil-dong’s hand without making physical contact, which tells you just how much thought he put into planning this out.
Min-hwan’s Threats and the Prosecutors’ Corruption Ring
Elsewhere, the plot around Min-hwan and his connections thickens. Madam Paeng informs Min-hwan and Ji-hwan’s mother, Song Hee-won, about the engagement and invites her, but Hee-won says she’s currently in the USA and can’t attend. Back at Reina, Yeo-ri tells Min-hwan about her engagement, and he admits flatly that he has feelings for her and has no intention of giving up.
At the same time, Gang-uk gets approached by a group of prosecutors who want him to join their informal favor-trading network, one they admit has involved illegal dealings in the past. Gang-uk refuses outright and reports them to the Ministry of Justice. Word gets back to Min-hwan that Gang-uk won’t play ball, and one of the prosecutors suggests having him transferred. Min-hwan then turns around and threatens Director Gong, revealing that he knows Gong used Reina shares as collateral for a personal loan.
Chairwoman Baek Collapses as Hee-won’s Past Resurfaces
The pressure catches up with Chairwoman Baek after she learns Gye-hee has quietly acquired more company shares. Worried about what this means for Yeo-ri’s future at Reina, she collapses and is rushed to the hospital. Even from her hospital bed, she urges Yeo-ri to finalize the engagement with Gang-uk quickly so she can transfer some of her shares to him and secure Yeo-ri’s position as CEO.
Meanwhile, Hee-won returns from the US and learns about the engagement, which triggers a memory from twelve years earlier: Ji-hwan getting ready for a yacht party with Yeo-ri, Hee-won making him wear a protective talisman, and Min-hwan promising to look after his brother that night. That night, Yeo-ri has a nightmare tied to the yacht party, while Min-hwan is shown quietly replaying his old argument with Ji-hwan in his head.
A Trapped Elevator, a Confession, and a Proposal Twist
On the day of the engagement, Yeo-ri’s anxiety spikes. She’s terrified that Gang-uk will abandon her the same way Gi-u did six years earlier. She calls him for reassurance, and he tells her he’s on his way up in the elevator to Siena Hall, right before the call cuts out. The elevator has stalled, trapping him inside.
Then comes the gut-punch of the episode: Min-hwan shows up in Yeo-ri’s room and tells her he knows her secret. He confesses his love for her again, but she’s clear that she doesn’t feel the same. He pushes back, warning her that Gang-uk could leave her too, just like Gi-u did.
Yeo-ri chooses to trust her gut instead of Min-hwan’s warning and goes looking for Gang-uk. He eventually breaks free and finds her, pulling her aside to the balcony. There, he shows her the rings he’d planned to use for his real proposal and promises he’s not going anywhere. The episode closes on Gang-uk kissing Yeo-ri, right as she turns the tables and proposes to him herself.
Episode 8 Review: Gang-uk Just Proved He’s the Real Deal, and Min-hwan Is Starting to Look Genuinely Dangerous
This episode started slow but built to some jaw-dropping revelations by the end, and I’m here for every bit of it. What stands out most is how naturally Gang-uk’s feelings for Yeo-ri have developed. Their relationship hasn’t been rushed, and that slow burn is exactly why the ending lands as hard as it does. The moment that really says everything about his character is Yeo-ri’s choice to trust Gang-uk, someone she’s only known a short time, over Min-hwan, someone who’s been in her life forever. That’s not a small thing, and I don’t think the show wants us to treat it as one.
There’s clearly more going on beneath the surface with Gang-uk and Ji-hwan. It looks increasingly likely that Gang-uk has Ji-hwan’s heart, quite possibly the result of surviving some kind of near-death accident, and Madam Paeng seems to know this and is fiercely protective of him because of it. The catch is that Gang-uk himself doesn’t appear to be aware of any of this yet, which is going to make for a rough reveal down the line. It also reframes Yeo-ri’s pull toward Gang-uk. If she had feelings for Ji-hwan before, her attraction to Gang-uk suddenly makes a lot more emotional sense.
Then there’s Hee-won’s clear favoritism toward her biological son, Ji-hwan, over Min-hwan, which I think is doing a lot of quiet work to explain Min-hwan’s resentment. Everything is pointing toward a fight between the brothers on that yacht, one that likely ended with Min-hwan responsible for Ji-hwan’s death. And based on how this episode ends, I’m now fairly convinced Min-hwan is behind the elevator malfunctions too. It’s not hard to imagine he used the same tactic to scare off Gi-u six years ago, and now he’s running the same playbook on Gang-uk. Ong Seong-wu has been genuinely likable in this role up to this point, but this episode is the first time Min-hwan has actually made me nervous. He’s starting to read less like a jealous rival and more like someone capable of real harm, and that shift is exactly what this show needed to raise the stakes going into the back half.
