Flashback to Christmas Day 2011: The Truth About Bo-na and Hyun-nam
From there, the show rewinds all the way back to Christmas Day 2011. We find Bo-na sitting alone, lost in a manhwa, when Tae-seong’s mother, Sun-ja, approaches her with a job: put on the Kingfisher gear and take out Seung-ah, who we know as Hyun-nam’s father. This moment ties directly back into how episode 1 opened, and now we finally get the full picture.
This time around, the show fills in the gaps we didn’t have before. Bo-na approaches young Hyun-nam at the Christmas market and tells her that if she wants a good present, she should crack her window open just a little that night. When her father chokes her out later, it’s exactly the opening Bo-na needs to take him down. It’s a genuinely chilling detail once you connect it to what we already knew about that night.
What’s interesting here is the motive. Kingfisher doesn’t see herself as a villain, she genuinely believes her work protects people, and that night, she was convinced she’d done the right thing. Hyun-nam, for her part, reveals she idolized Kingfisher and desperately wanted to grow up to be just like Bo-na, clinging to the promise made to her at that market for years afterward.
Present-day Hyun-nam isn’t willing to let this go quietly, though. She confronts Bo-na and demands she own up to breaking her end of the bargain, but Bo-na isn’t having it, she calls her bluff outright. And here’s the twist: there was never any actual poison involved that night. Bo-na had only given Tae-seong some sleeping medication, nothing more.
The flashback deepens further when we learn that six years ago, Hyun-nam spotted Bo-na by chance while she was out with her husband. Seeing her idol living what looked like an ordinary, quiet life left Hyun-nam disappointed, and it’s part of what pushed her to try to resurrect “the old Kingfisher.” Bo-na, though, isn’t interested in going back. She reminds Hyun-nam that her husband saved her life and gave her the greatest gift she’s ever received, her daughter, Yul. Once the air is cleared and the value of family is laid out plainly, Hyun-nam finally relents, and Bo-na makes it clear that her family is everything to her now.
A Body in the Woods Points to Organ Traffickers
Morning brings a grim discovery: hikers stumble across a dead body in the woods, pulling the detectives straight into a new case. The coroner’s report is disturbing, the lungs, kidneys, liver, and pancreas have all been removed from the body, pointing to organ harvesters actively working the area.
The Durumi Electronics Sales Workshop Sets the Stage
Meanwhile, over at Durumi Electronics, the team gathers for a real team meeting ahead of their annual Sales Team Workshop. The location? The exact same area the police are currently investigating, which is far from a coincidence, as we’ll soon find out.
Dong-jin and his team are determined to push harder on the disappearances plaguing the region. CCTV hasn’t turned up a single useful clue, which tells Dong-jin the people responsible know this territory intimately enough to move without ever being caught on camera. With roughly 80 different lodging facilities scattered across the area, Dong-jin splits his team up to canvass the region, a process that’s clearly going to eat up a lot of time.
Young-do Gets Taken by the Organ Traffickers
Back at the workshop, the Durumi Electronics crew is having the time of their lives. Yoo’s sharpshooting skills score them premium beef, and the team cleans up in the group games. It’s all fun and games until Young-do, desperate for cell service in a dead zone, sneaks outside at night to find a signal, and gets knocked out cold the second he finds one.
He’s dragged underground into a hidden den where a group of organ traffickers is operating right under everyone’s noses. They tie him up, and the ringleader, an old man with an unsettling grin, announces his plans to “go hunting.”
The Twist: It Was All a Setup From the Start
Here’s where the episode really pulls the rug out. Not long after, the rest of the Durumi Electronics team collapses after drinking honey water laced with sleeping pills, everyone except Bo-na and her crew. As the show cuts back in time again, we learn this entire workshop trip was orchestrated from day one. The group already knew about Mount Taegong’s Missing Persons case and had a rough idea of where the traffickers were hiding. The “Sales Workshop” was nothing more than cover for gathering intel.
Even the lack of cell service turns out to be intentional, the traffickers have been jamming electronics around the compound. Bo-na’s group had already located the underground den before that night, and Hyun-nam had even prepared an antidote in advance to counteract the sleeping pills everyone else unknowingly drank.
When Hyun-nam slips outside looking for Tae-min, he quietly pulls her aside just before the thugs arrive to move in on the rest of the Durumi Electronics crew. Tae-min and Hyun-nam then burst in to free Young-do, sparking an all-out brawl in the main hall. Young-do explains that they hold off attacking until every target has been verified multiple times over, and this time, that final approval comes through right as the fight kicks off. Bo-na ends up taking the traffickers down almost single-handedly, closing out the episode on a high note for her, if no one else.
Episode 3 Review: A Strong Reveal Undercut by a Weak Payoff
A Bona Fide Killer continues to wrestle with its tone, and episode 3 doesn’t fully solve that problem. On one hand, you’ve got real dramatic tension in the group’s hunt for targets and the cat-and-mouse dynamic that’s been building. On the other, the show seems to work against its own setup by resolving the entire Hyun-nam cliffhanger in a way that renders most of the earlier tension moot, she’s just part of the gang now, following what turns out to be a misunderstanding.
The resolution to the organ trafficker case lands flat too, if I’m being honest. Bo-na dismantles them without breaking a sweat, and while I understand they’re meant to be disposable villains, the amount of setup and planning that went into this confrontation deserved a more satisfying payoff than what we got. It’s the kind of moment that should feel triumphant, but instead it just feels rushed.
Tae-seong barely gets anything to do this episode, spending most of his screen time at home with Yul while Bo-na handles all the action.
