Widow’s Bay Episode 6 Recap and Review: The Chilling Origins of Richard Warren’s Curse Finally Come to Light

Episode 6 of Widow’s Bay takes a dramatic detour into the past, transporting viewers all the way back to September 1702. After weeks of mystery surrounding Richard Warren and the island’s dark history, this chapter finally reveals how the curse began. It’s a bold shift away from the present-day storyline, but it delivers some of the season’s most important answers while raising a few unsettling new questions.

Widow’s Bay Episode 6 Recap

The story opens through Sarah’s perspective as she journeys to Widow’s Bay Island to marry Richard Warren. In her journal, she confesses her worries about the arranged marriage, hoping her future husband will at least be kind and pleasant to look at.

When she arrives, Richard is treated almost like a local hero. Everyone she encounters speaks highly of him. Even so, there are hints that something about him is unusual. Pastor Collins mentions that Richard has prepared special wedding vows, though the ceremony itself proceeds without incident. With only two witnesses present, Sarah becomes Richard’s wife.

Afterward, Richard introduces her to his five children before quickly returning to his responsibilities. At first, Sarah seems determined to embrace her new life, but it doesn’t take long for strange events to begin piling up around her.

The Disturbing Truth Behind Richard’s Behavior

One night, Sarah is awakened by a noise coming from downstairs. Curious and concerned, she investigates and discovers Richard consuming strange black mushrooms while appearing completely detached from reality. He seems trapped in a trance-like state before suddenly snapping back to normal and telling her to leave him alone.

That moment marks the beginning of Sarah’s growing unease.

Richard keeps his distance from her and refuses to share much about himself. He won’t even sleep beside her. Meanwhile, the island is dealing with a devastating plague that continues to claim lives.

Things become even more alarming when Sarah overhears a conversation between Richard and a visitor discussing the outbreak. According to the guest, one afflicted man became so violent that he murdered his own wife. Richard abruptly orders Sarah back to bed, but she secretly witnesses something horrifying: Richard kills the visitor.

The following morning, her fears deepen when she discovers a hidden entrance leading to the basement. Inside, she spots the dead man’s walking stick, confirming that what she saw was real.

Pastor Collins Reveals the Island’s Dark Suspicions

Terrified, Sarah seeks help from Pastor Collins.

Instead of calming her fears, he makes them worse.

Collins tells her that many people believe Richard made a bargain with the devil. The townspeople blame him not only for the plague but also for several mysterious disappearances, including that of his former wife. Collins and his supporters have already decided that Richard must die, and they want Sarah’s help.

Their first request is simple but dangerous: leave the house door unlocked so they can get inside.

Later that evening, Sarah nearly exposes herself during dinner when she references the disappearances Collins mentioned. Richard notices the comment, creating one of the episode’s most tense exchanges. Fortunately for her, she manages to recover before revealing too much.

Richard Survives What Should Have Killed Him

The assassination attempt happens that very night.

An intruder sneaks into the house and stabs Richard while he sleeps. For a brief moment, it appears the townspeople have succeeded.

Then Richard survives.

Not only does he survive, but he recovers in a way that makes it clear he is something far beyond an ordinary man. Sarah immediately realizes she may be living with something unnatural.

Richard warns her never to leave the house again and vows to uncover whoever wants him dead. He sends her upstairs to pray while he deals with the aftermath himself.

The next morning, Sarah discovers she has been locked inside.

Sarah Decides Richard Must Be Stopped

Determined to escape, Sarah ventures into the basement and finds a route out of the house. She rushes back to Pastor Collins and tells him everything she witnessed.

At this point, she no longer has doubts. She is convinced Richard is the devil himself.

Collins proposes a new plan. Sarah must poison Richard’s drink, and once he is dead, Collins promises to help her and the children flee the island safely.

Before carrying out the plan, Sarah records her fears in her journal. She writes about Richard’s pendant necklace and worries that he somehow controls the island through it. More importantly, she becomes convinced that he intends to kill her eventually.

Unfortunately, Richard catches her writing and demands to read what she has written.

A Desperate Escape From Widow’s Bay

That night, Sarah puts everything on the line.

She attempts to distract Richard and offers him brandy laced with poison. The scheme almost works, but Richard quickly notices that she refuses to drink from the same glass. Realizing he has been betrayed, he attacks her and begins choking her.

The confrontation is interrupted by one of Richard’s sons, who strikes him with a log. In a shocking revelation, the boy claims Richard already killed his mother.

With Richard unconscious, Sarah gathers the children and heads for the shore. At the same time, Pastor Collins and his followers move in to capture Richard before he can recover.

The escape nearly falls apart when Sarah and the children arrive too late to board the departing ship. Desperate, she urges them into a smaller boat that can still reach it.

Then another threat emerges.

The doctor’s wife, visibly ill and covered in blood, appears and begs to come with them. When Sarah refuses, the woman attacks. A violent struggle follows, ending with Sarah victorious. She and the children finally push away from the island and escape.

Richard Warren Is Buried Alive

While Sarah flees, Pastor Collins and his group confront Richard. Believing they have finally defeated him, they place him inside a coffin and bury him alive. What happens next changes everything viewers thought they knew.

Rather than begging for mercy, Richard desperately tries to warn them. He admits he made a deal with the devil, but insists the arrangement was meant to protect them. He pleads for them to honor the agreement and release him, explaining that he cannot die.

Nobody listens.

When Richard learns that Sarah and the children have already escaped, his panic only intensifies. Collins and the others ignore his warnings and continue covering the coffin with dirt as his screams echo beneath the ground.

Back in the present day, the episode closes with Wyck and Patricia discovering Richard’s buried coffin, connecting the events of 1702 directly to the modern storyline.

Why Episode 6 Changes Everything About Widow’s Bay

I wasn’t expecting Widow’s Bay to devote almost an entire episode to a flashback, especially after the momentum built by Episode 5. At first, the transition feels abrupt. The present-day mystery essentially pauses while the series rewinds more than three centuries.

Yet the gamble pays off.

The episode succeeds largely because Sarah becomes such a compelling focal point. Betty delivers an enigmatic performance that keeps the audience invested even when the story leaves behind familiar characters and timelines. Through Sarah’s eyes, the island feels increasingly claustrophobic, and every revelation pushes the tension higher.

What I found particularly interesting is that the show finally explains the origins of Richard’s curse without fully explaining the force behind it. We learn that a pact exists. We learn that Richard cannot die. We learn that the townspeople misunderstood at least part of what was happening.

But the identity of the dark entity remains hidden.

That missing piece is what keeps the mystery alive. Instead of providing all the answers, Episode 6 carefully preserves the show’s biggest secret. By the end, I was less interested in whether Richard was a villain and more interested in understanding the exact nature of the deal he made and whether the island can ever be freed from its consequences.

For a flashback episode, that’s an impressive achievement. It answers just enough questions to satisfy viewers while leaving the most important mystery unresolved.
