Evan was eventually born safely, but Lauren never recovered. Instead, she remained trapped in a catatonic state, another apparent victim of the island’s curse.
The revelation completely reframes Tom’s behavior throughout the season. His protectiveness, his fear, and his refusal to let Evan leave suddenly make far more sense.
In the present day, Tom becomes consumed by anxiety for his son’s safety. Exhausted and physically ill, he spends much of the evening vomiting and struggling to process what he has remembered.
Then comes one final disturbing moment.
As he kneels beside the toilet, Tom hears a thick, static-like voice speaking from somewhere beyond his perception. He cannot understand the words.
When he looks up, darkness surrounds him. A shadowy figure appears to move within it. And then everything goes silent.

What impressed me most about Episode 5 is that it avoids the obvious path.
The entire setup around the mushrooms suggests Tom is about to witness some horrifying supernatural entity. The episode certainly teases that possibility. Yet the most important discovery ends up being deeply personal rather than purely paranormal.
Tom’s recovered memory changes almost everything we thought we knew about him.
Up to this point, it was easy to view him as an overly controlling father who refused to acknowledge the increasingly bizarre events unfolding around Widow’s Bay. He frequently dismissed concerns, clashed with Wyck, and appeared determined to maintain a sense of normalcy no matter what evidence emerged.
Now we know he has already experienced the curse firsthand.
He watched it destroy Lauren and prevent his family from escaping the island. That knowledge transforms his actions from simple denial into trauma-driven survival. Suddenly, his desperation feels tragic rather than frustrating.
The reveal also deepens one of the season’s recurring themes: the way secrets are inherited across generations. Richard’s heroic legacy appears increasingly questionable. Sarah’s diary suggests the town’s official history may be built on carefully maintained lies.
At the same time, Tom’s relationship with Evan reflects that same pattern. He hides the truth because he believes it will protect his son, but the secrecy only fuels anger and resentment.
The emotional distance between them feels more painful now that we understand what Tom has been carrying.
From a filmmaking perspective, this episode is also one of the show’s most visually confident efforts.
