After spending much of the season teasing the truth behind Widow’s Bay’s curse, Episode 7 finally begins connecting some of the biggest pieces of the mystery. The hour delivers long-awaited answers about Richard’s connection to the demon haunting the island, pushes Tom and Wyck into a dangerous mission beyond the border, and drops a surprising revelation about Evan’s mother.
Just when it seems like the curse might finally be broken, the episode’s final moments leave a lingering question hanging over everything.
Widow’s Bay Season 1 Episode 7 Recap
The episode picks up immediately after Tom’s terrifying encounter with the demon. Exhausted, he falls asleep but is quickly awakened by a call from Wyck and Sarah, who urgently summon him to the museum.
When Tom arrives, he learns something almost impossible to believe: Richard is still alive.
Even more shocking, Richard has been communicating through written notes and insists that he will only speak to the island’s protector. Since Tom is the mayor, everyone assumes he qualifies for the role.
Terrified but determined, Tom enters the room to meet Richard. What begins as a cautious conversation quickly turns into one of the most important revelations of the season.
Richard explains that the demon preyed upon the desperation of the island’s earliest settlers. Starving and struggling to survive, they became easy targets. In exchange for allowing them to establish a settlement, Richard agreed to sacrifice lives to the creature.
To prove his story, Richard opens the pendant he has been carrying and reveals the signed covenant that sealed the agreement.
The reason he has remained alive for so long is equally horrifying. The demon continues sustaining him because the pact cannot end while he still exists. According to Richard, there is only one way to break the arrangement: remove him from the island’s sphere of influence. Once beyond the demon’s reach, he will finally be allowed to die, taking the covenant with him.
Before moving forward with the plan, Richard asks to see belongings connected to his family, which have been preserved inside the museum.
Tom and Wyck Prepare a Dangerous Crossing
While Richard reflects on the remnants of his family’s history, Tom works on convincing Wyck to carry out the risky plan.
Wyck eventually agrees, though he has one condition. Richard must return to the coffin before they leave. Tom is tasked with persuading him, promising that he will be released again once they are safely on the boat.
At the same time, another storyline unfolds elsewhere on the island.
Bechir arrives to investigate a noise complaint and encounters Patricia. She manages to divert his attention and convinces him to drive her home. During the ride, he asks what Tom has been doing because nobody has heard from him for an entire day.
Patricia finally tells him everything.
The explanation is so unbelievable that Bechir dismisses it outright. Rather than entertain the possibility that any of it could be true, he decides he wants no part in the situation. He asks Patricia to pass along his resignation to Tom and makes it clear he has no interest in sticking around to learn whether her claims have any basis in reality.
A Journey Beyond the Border Turns Violent
The most tense portion of the episode unfolds once Tom, Wyck, and Richard set sail.
Wyck’s strategy is simple. He intends to take the main boat as close to the border as possible. From there, Tom will tow Richard’s coffin across the boundary using a dinghy.
Unfortunately, things begin falling apart when Tom chooses not to follow instructions and allows Richard out of the coffin.
Wyck immediately objects, explaining that he has seen firsthand what happens near the border. He shares a painful memory from his youth involving a friend. After stealing a boat together, they drifted dangerously close to the boundary. The incident ended in tragedy, and Wyck has carried the guilt ever since because he abandoned his friend in order to survive.
That experience is why he refuses to trust Richard. Wyck believes Richard’s survival instincts will eventually take over, no matter what promises he has made. His fears prove justified.
As the boat approaches the border, Tom attempts to keep Richard calm by offering him food. Instead, Richard suddenly attacks.
The confrontation creates chaos onboard, but Tom and Wyck manage to overpower him and force him back into the coffin just before reaching their destination.
Richard Meets His Fate While Tom and Wyck Celebrate
The final stage of the mission demands one last sacrifice.
Tom hands Wyck a life ring and pushes him from the boat, allowing the coffin to cross the boundary. For a brief moment, everything hangs in the balance. Then Richard finally reaches the point beyond the demon’s influence. The result is immediate. His body collapses into nothing more than bones and dust.
Tom quickly turns the boat around and retrieves Wyck from the water. The two men are exhilarated. After everything they have endured, they genuinely believe they have succeeded in ending the curse that has haunted Widow’s Bay for generations.
Whether they are right remains another matter entirely.
Evan Discovers Tom’s Lie About His Mother
Back on the island, Kelly encourages Evan to investigate Tom’s room.
She suspects there are secrets being hidden from him, and Evan’s growing doubts about his father push him to look for answers.
While searching through the room, they uncover old photographs showing a young Evan with his mother. The discovery changes everything.
For years, Evan believed his mother died during childbirth. The photographs make that explanation impossible.
In an instant, he realizes Tom has been lying.
The episode doesn’t provide answers about what actually happened to her, but it opens an entirely new mystery that could have major consequences moving forward.
The Final Image Suggests the Story Isn’t Over Yet
Just when the episode appears ready to end on a hopeful note, Widow’s Bay delivers one last unsettling moment.
At the inn, Kurt throws out a troublesome customer. The camera then shifts toward a painting hanging on the wall. Inside the artwork is a young boy, seemingly Richard’s son, reaching toward an outstretched hand after a boat wreck.
The image arrives without explanation, but it immediately casts doubt on the apparent victory Tom and Wyck just achieved.
If Richard’s bloodline still exists in some form, the curse may not be as finished as everyone believes.

I really enjoyed how Episode 7 balances revelation with momentum. Many mystery-driven shows struggle once they start providing answers, but Widow’s Bay keeps moving while finally explaining the origin of the island’s curse.
The scenes between Tom and Wyck are a major reason the episode works so well. Even when they are technically working toward the same goal, they continue arguing and trading sarcastic remarks. Their relationship has become one of the show’s strongest assets, and their absence was definitely felt in Episode 6.
The Richard storyline also pays off nicely. Learning that the curse began with a desperate bargain made during the settlement’s earliest days gives the mythology a clearer shape without overcomplicating things.
Meanwhile, the reveal involving Evan and his mother adds an emotional layer that the series needed. The mystery is no longer just about demons and ancient agreements. It has become personal. Now that Evan knows Tom lied, the questions surrounding his mother suddenly feel just as important as the supernatural plot.
My only frustration comes from the closing scene. Tom and Wyck appear to have completed the impossible task and broken the covenant, yet the painting suggests there may still be another thread connecting Richard’s family to the island.
That final image is effective because it immediately undermines the sense of victory. The episode gives viewers answers, but it also leaves us wondering whether the curse is truly over, or whether Widow’s Bay has one more secret waiting to surface.
