House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 Recap
The aftermath of the Battle of the Gullet sets the tone for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2. Even though the battle ends as a victory, the cost is devastating for Rhaenyra and her side. The biggest loss arrives when Jace’s body is brought back to Dragonstone.
Rhaenyra is completely shattered when she sees him. She looks at her son’s lifeless body, struggling to understand what happened and repeatedly asking what he has done. The grief in this moment is overwhelming, and it’s one of those scenes that shows how much this war has taken from her personally.
While Dragonstone deals with the loss, Alyn and Addam search through the destruction left behind by the battle, trying to find Corlys. After searching through the remains, they finally discover that he survived.
The mood at Dragonstone is still heavy when Ser Simon Strong arrives with a message. Daemon learns about Jace’s death and receives instructions to march toward King’s Landing and take the Iron Throne for Rhaenyra. Before moving forward, though, Daemon returns to Dragonstone.
Before he leaves, Alys asks Daemon to convince Rhaenyra to give her Harrenhal. Daemon immediately pushes back against the idea, arguing that giving a castle like Harrenhal to a midwife would create political problems.
Meanwhile, at the Vale, Rhaena asks the Lady for help. She is supposed to be heading on a ship to Pentos, so her request does not receive the warmest response. Rhaena tries to negotiate by offering protection, and eventually the Lady agrees. She makes it clear that the Vale is large enough and that she simply does not want to see them again.
Elsewhere, Aegon’s journey takes a dangerous turn when his transport is attacked by the Triarchy. Lord Larys and Aegon use the chaos as a chance to escape. Aegon then decides he wants to go to Rook’s Rest, where Sunfyre was left after Aemond attacked him.
Back in King’s Landing, Alicent begins making her own moves. She meets with Commander Largent and the Gold Cloaks because she knows Rhaenyra is coming back. Her plan is to use Helaena’s authority to help open the gates and surrender the Red Keep.
However, things become complicated when Lord Jasper confronts Alicent in her chambers. He brings up her connection with Criston Cole and attempts to force himself on her. Grand Maester Orwyle discovers what is happening and immediately steps in. Jasper tries to shift the blame by bringing up Alicent’s betrayal, but Orwyle refuses to accept his excuses and has him arrested.
News then reaches Dragonstone that Vhagar has been seen near the Riverlands. Since Aemond is heading toward Harrenhal as Alicent promised, Rhaenyra sees an opportunity. She and Daemon prepare to fly to King’s Landing and take the city while Aemond is away.
Their plan is simple: secure the capital first, then deal with Aemond and Vhagar afterward. Aemond has no idea what is happening and continues his journey toward Harrenhal.
When Aemond arrives, he burns many of the troops before entering the castle. He confronts Simon Strong, but unlike Daemon, Simon cannot calm him down. Aemond attacks and kills Simon along with other members of House Strong.
Alys survives the attack, but Aemond’s victory does not last. He suddenly collapses, revealing that he was stabbed in the spine during the fight. He asks Alys for help, but his wounds are too severe, and he eventually bleeds out.
At the same time, Rhaenyra and Daemon arrive in King’s Landing. Their timing is perfect. Alicent and Helaena are trying to find a way out, while the Red Keep has been left open.
The Iron Throne is now within Rhaenyra’s reach.
Some soldiers loyal to the Greens attempt to resist, but Daemon quickly deals with them. The City Watch eventually arrives and declares their support for Rhaenyra, reminding everyone that their loyalty belongs to her.
The guards at the gates also surrender after Ser Luthor convinces them to put down their weapons. The city has fallen, and the Iron Throne belongs to Rhaenyra.
The only problem is Aegon. Rhaenyra and Daemon want him, but he is nowhere to be found. Instead, Daemon receives a message from a jailor that Lord Larys has left him something. The surprise is Otto Hightower.
For Rhaenyra, this is the moment that will define her rule. She knows killing Otto will strengthen her claim, but she struggles with the decision. After hesitating, she finally beheads him on the second attempt. Daemon then follows by executing Lord Jasper.
Afterward, Alicent is brought before Rhaenyra with Helaena. Seeing Otto’s headless body leaves Alicent horrified. When she and Rhaenyra lock eyes, it becomes clear that their conflict is far from settled.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 Review
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 feels like the kind of turning point that changes the entire direction of the story. With Rhaenyra finally taking control of King’s Landing, the Targaryen struggle reaches a major moment, but the victory feels anything but complete.
The relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra remains the emotional core of the series, and this episode puts that conflict front and center. Alicent follows through on her promise to help hand over the throne, but the consequences are far more painful than she likely expected. Rhaenyra may gain the crown, but she also has to kill Alicent’s father to truly secure her position.
That final look between them says more than any speech could. There is still history, regret, anger, and unfinished business between them.
Aemond’s downfall is another major moment. What makes it interesting is that his own aggression becomes the reason he loses. Unlike Daemon, he does not hesitate to destroy anyone standing in his way, and that choice eventually turns against him.
The episode also shows how fragile power really is in this world. A city can change hands, armies can surrender, and a ruler can sit on the throne, but none of that means the war is finished. The personal damage left behind is much harder to repair.
Moving forward, the story now enters a new stage. Rhaenyra has achieved the victory she has fought for, but House of the Dragon makes it clear that winning one battle does not end the fight. The next conflict is already waiting.
