Neagley just took a big swig of drugged milk. On purpose? Not exactly. But she did it, and the elevator doors closed right after.
That’s how “Breaking and Entering” ends, and yes, I yelled at my screen. Let’s get into it.
The Opening: Meet Patient 42
Neagley Season 1 Episode 4 starts dark. Lawrence Cole and Pierce test their new drug on Owen, an ex-soldier. It forces him to relive the worst moments of his time on the battlefield.
Pierce doesn’t even use his name. He calls him “Patient 42.”
This new version is far more dangerous than the earlier one, and even Lawrence starts to wobble. He asks what they’re actually doing here. Good question, buddy. A bit late, though.
Neagley vs. Everyone’s Feelings
Over at Echo Canyon, Keno is spiraling after what he’s seen. Neagley’s response? Zero sympathy. She doesn’t want to pull him out, and she tells him to keep digging into the flour mystery.
Renee is the softer one. She tells Keno to check in with her regularly, and then she confronts Neagley about it. She points out how prickly Neagley has been, especially since she compared Keno to a cockroach. Ouch.
They sort out a small misunderstanding, and then it’s back to work. Renee digs into the military records of Ford and Davos. The logic is simple. If those two drank the Kool-Aid, they probably dragged other people in with them.
Everybody’s Getting Watched
Murphy is having the group followed. When Renee leaves, he makes a phone call, and you know it isn’t a friendly one.
Neagley doesn’t notice. She’s busy planning to break into the Deputy Chief’s house.
Trouble at Neagley’s Apartment
While she’s out, Pierce’s assassins get into her place. They lace her milk with something, most likely Tranqlara, the drug Pierce is cooking up.
Then Gerry York walks in at the worst possible time. The goons grab him and hold a knife on him.
I had a bad feeling right there, and I was right.
The Deputy Chief’s House
Back to Neagley’s break-in. Inside the Deputy Chief’s home, she finds papers showing he spent $800K on shares of a pharmaceutical ETF.
Is that a coincidence? Come on. It smells like Tranqlara money.
She also plants a tracker in his office before she gets chased out of the house. She escapes unseen and heads straight to the hospital.
Calvin Says Nothing
At the hospital, Neagley asks Calvin about the Deputy Chief. She also brings up her own trauma, including why she doesn’t like being touched.
Calvin doesn’t give her a thing. Quiet scene, but it tells us a lot about how deep this goes.
Riley Refuses to Play Along
Meanwhile, Murphy pulls Riley in at the station. He says he wants their stories to match on the Davos situation. Riley says no.
That’s going to come back to bite someone. Murphy doesn’t strike me as a man who takes “no” well.
Later, Riley meets Renee, and they connect Owen to the whole mess. We already knew this, of course, since we saw it in the opening. Owen is now in a psych ward after his time at Echo Canyon.
Life at Echo Canyon Gets Ugly
Keno asks Mandy, another farm worker, what happened to Tommy. She tells him Tommy was caught in the barn filming something. The project is top secret, so people assumed he was working against Lawrence Cole. The Acolytes exiled him.
Mandy also covers for Keno when someone asks where he was the night before. That kindness costs her.
At the afternoon commune, she’s called out for insubordination in front of everyone. Then she’s beaten into submission, and worse, she’s inducted into “the project.”
Keno knows exactly what that means. He tells Renee everything, and she wants him out immediately. Keno refuses. He wants to save Mandy first.
Brave, yes. Also probably a terrible idea.
Owen Finally Talks
Neagley and Riley visit Owen and start asking about Echo Canyon. He opens up a little. He says Lawrence Cole promised to “fix” him by taking away his trauma. He also mentions Pierce.
Then he breaks down crying and the conversation ends. But that Pierce name gives the group a real lead.
Keno in the Barn
Now for the scariest scene of the episode. Keno finds body parts inside a truck in the barn. Then people arrive to move them out of the basement so they can be buried.
Keno has nowhere to go. So he hides among the corpses.
I was holding my breath through this whole sequence.
The Ending: Blood and Milk
Back at her apartment, Neagley gets a call from Renee. Gerry’s phone pinged near her building.
Neagley checks the floor with her UV light. There’s blood everywhere. Gerry is almost certainly dead, and someone was in her home.
So what does she do? She makes cereal with the laced milk and pours it into a thermos. Then she leaves, takes a swig in the elevator, and realizes what she just did.
Cue the “uh oh.”
My Take: Episode 4 Review
We’ve reached the halfway point, and my main complaint hasn’t changed. Neagley keeps showing us the answers too early, then makes us wait while the characters catch up.
We’ve known Pierce was involved from the start. It still took several episodes for Neagley and the gang to connect him to everything. Owen is the same story this time. The opening scene tells us how he fits in, so the investigation mostly feels like a recap of things we already know.
It’s frustrating, because there are good things in this episode.
Renee calling out Neagley’s cold attitude is my favorite moment. It links nicely to Neagley’s trauma, and I hope it pushes her to soften a little. Right now she’s missing the quiet empathy that Reacher brings to his own scenes.
The Echo Canyon storyline is also the most gripping part of the season so far. The barn scene alone was worth the watch.
The pacing may finally be picking up, and there’s still time to turn things around.
Final Rating: 6/10
Strong tension, a few great character moments, and a killer cliffhanger. But the predictable storytelling holds it back.
