I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure how “A Shop for Killers” Season 2 would pull off Jin-man’s return after that gut-punch of a season finale. Episode 1 answers that question in the best way possible: with a full-blown heist, a fake death explained (mostly), and Bale finally getting a face-to-face reckoning with the man he’s been hunting. Here’s everything that happens, and what I made of it.
How Episode 1 Opens: Bale Walks Into a Trap
A Shop for Killers Season 2 Episode 1 kicks off inside Babylon’s facility, where Bale is strolling through when a junior employee spots him. He doesn’t take kindly to being watched, he knocks the employee down cold and blasts a hole in the wall in front of him with a gun. What’s waiting on the other side is the kind of reveal that immediately tells you this season means business: Yong-han, and a second Bale standing right next to him. The first Bale rips off his mask, and underneath is Jeong Jin-man himself.
It’s a fantastic opening beat, and it sets up the rest of the episode as one long flashback explaining exactly how we got here.
The Flashback: Faking a Death and Building a Plan
We rewind to the day Ji-an’s entire life fell apart. Jin-man is shown watching his own corpse staged in a bathtub, the show doesn’t explain how he pulled this off, which is a minor gap I’ll get into later, while he hides just out of sight and lets Jeong-min “discover” the body.
From there we’re introduced to Park Jin-woo, a police officer who slips through a hidden door inside a shipping container and down into an underground bunker. Waiting for him: Jin-man, an operative named Pasin, and a North Korean defector named Cheol-seung. This is really where the episode’s engine starts running.
Jin-man lays out the stakes bluntly. Babylon believes he’s dead, and that buys him exactly 62 hours. His plan is to break into Babylon’s facility, hidden in plain sight as a rice factory in the middle of nowhere, and steal the server holding every detail of the organization’s operations over the years. With that server as leverage, he can finally cut Ji-an loose from all of it for good. And buried inside that same plan is something darker: Jin-man intends to kill Bale.
The server itself is the real prize, and it’s not an easy target. It’s stored underwater specifically so it can’t be hacked, and it only surfaces once a day at 3 p.m. for a routine check. The plan is for the trio to smuggle themselves into the facility inside a garbage truck, raid the armory for ammunition, and blow a hole through the walls to physically extract it during that narrow window.
To make it work, Cheol-seung hacks the phone belonging to a guard named Kim Jung-ho, who’s usually posted near the entrance, and clones his ID. He also builds a prosthetic Bale mask for Jin-man to wear into the facility. Right as the planning wraps up, Ji-an calls Jin-man’s phone, and Jin-woo steps in to “break the news” about her uncle’s death.
Meanwhile, across town, Yong-han meets with Mr. Kim and tries to flip him against Jin-man, dangling a new position at Babylon along with a bag of cash.
The Heist: Garbage Trucks, Rice Silos, and a Server Worth Killing For
The infiltration itself is where the episode really earns its keep. Jin-woo drives the trash pickup truck through the gates while Pasin and Cheol-seung ride hidden inside barrels lined with X-ray-resistant material. Once they’re inside, things immediately get complicated: they spot groups of Babylon operatives mobilizing to go after Ji-an. Around the same time, Brother messages Jin-man to tell him Min-hye has been hurt, and he asks Pasin to abandon the heist and go help Ji-an instead.
Cheol-seung, though, stays behind. He climbs into the vents, hacks the CCTV network through the wiring, and positions himself right above the server room to wait for the daily check. Jin-man, meanwhile, suits up in the Bale disguise and drives to the facility gates. There’s a tense moment involving Bale’s duplicate entries and a password Jin-man doesn’t actually know, but Cheol-seung’s hacking bails him out just in time. Jin-man heads for the armory to grab explosives, and that’s when two security robots clock that he isn’t the real Bale and attack him.
Elsewhere, an employee notices something is off: two cars have been registered under Bale’s name. The net is tightening.
As the server begins descending back underwater, Cheol-seung doesn’t wait around. He rappels down, takes out the guard on duty, and hauls the server back up himself, wiring it with explosives on the spot. It almost works cleanly, until the guard he knocked out wakes up and hits the emergency alarm while Cheol-seung is still mid-setup.
That alarm is what triggers the episode’s opening scene: Jin-man blasting through the wall to go after Bale. Their fight is genuinely one of the season’s best so far, spilling out onto a bridge inside what turns out to be a rice storage silo. Bale ultimately throws himself off the bridge on purpose, letting the rice below cushion his fall.
Outside, Cheol-seung’s explosives finally detonate, tearing open a massive hole in the ground straight down to the server room. Jin-man, still being chased, sprints to the rooftop, where Jin-woo and Cheol-seung are waiting in a helicopter, with the server itself dangling beneath it. Jin-man leaps off the roof to catch the chopper, and they make their escape.
The Ending: Full Circle Back to Ji-an
The episode closes by looping directly back into the final scene of Season 1, Jin-man stepping out of a car to meet Ji-an, tying the two seasons together in one clean motion.
Then comes the epilogue: a club called Sigma in Osaka, where a woman takes a phone call. The caller asks if she remembers Jeong Jin-man. She smiles. She says yes.
The Review: A Heist Episode That Flips the Script Perfectly
What I love most about this premiere is the structural choice at its core. Season 1 was built around Ji-an defending Babylon’s facility from people trying to break in. Season 2 opens by putting Jin-man and his crew on the other side of that exact equation, breaking into the same kind of fortress instead of holding one. It’s a clever mirror, and it works because the show trusts us to notice it without spelling it out.
Getting the day Ji-an’s life exploded from Jin-man’s point of view is also a smart structural move for a season premiere. We already know what this day looks like from Ji-an’s side, now we get the machinery behind it: why he faked his death, what it cost him to pull off, and how deep the planning actually went. It reframes a moment we thought we understood.
The action itself doesn’t miss a beat either. The fight choreography, the tense score running under nearly every scene, and the new robotic security additions all keep the tension cranked up from the cold open straight through to the rooftop escape. Cheol-seung, in particular, is a great new addition, his prosthetics work and hacking skills give the heist plan actual texture instead of just being a plot device to move things along.
If I’m nitpicking, there are two gaps worth mentioning. First, we never actually get the mechanics of how Jin-man faked his death in that bathtub, the show hints it’s tied to Cheol-seung’s prosthetic skills and Jin-woo’s police access, but it’s never spelled out. Second, the logistics of physically attaching that server to a helicopter and lifting it off the ground are just… skipped. Neither one derails the episode, but they’re the kind of details a heist story usually likes to show off.
Overall, this is a strong way to kick off the season. It’s tense, it’s confident, and it makes it clear this story isn’t going to stay confined to one location the way Season 1 largely did. I’m already curious where Bale fits back into things after that bridge fall, and what that Osaka phone call is setting up.
