Everyone manages to pull it off except Elle, who ends up going anyway just to keep the group on track.
Things get complicated fast. Kimberly shows up in detention too, and instead of ignoring the group, she clocks that something’s up and threatens to expose them unless they let her in on the plan. Once she learns the truth, she actually offers to help. Meanwhile, Elle uses the chaos of a hall pass request to swipe the office keys straight from the janitor, setting the heist portion of the episode into motion.
While all of this school drama unfolds, there’s a quieter but very telling scene between Eva and Dean. She’s helping him prep for his mayoral campaign speech, but she also casually brings up Elle’s digging into Principal Anderson’s finances. Dean’s reaction makes it pretty clear this detail isn’t going to just disappear, it’s the kind of information that could easily be used against someone down the line.
The Plan Nearly Falls Apart
Back at school, Elle isn’t thrilled that her friends brought Kimberly into the fold, and honestly, the tension between the group only escalates from there. Liz clogs a toilet with tampons to pull the janitor away, buying the group more time to execute their plan. In between the scheming, Elle notices that Kimberly and Liz went to the same summer camp and wonders out loud if there’s history between them, though Kimberly shuts that conversation down immediately.
There’s also a smaller, more personal beat tucked into all this chaos. Dustin tries to ask Elle about her connection with Miles, and she avoids the question entirely. Miles, for his part, apologizes for telling Shannon about the kiss, but Elle isn’t ready to go there with him. She still feels like she’d be betraying Shannon if she let anything happen with Miles, and that guilt clearly hasn’t faded.

Not only does Anderson drag him back to detention, he decides to personally supervise the room and refuses to let anyone leave. It’s a genuine gut-punch of a setback, and Kimberly doesn’t hold back, mocking Elle for botching her own detention assignment while Liz, Dustin, and Miles start questioning whether Elle is even committed to the plan anymore.
The Heist, the Fire Alarm, and a Mysterious Polaroid
With Anderson now watching the room like a hawk, the group needs a new distraction, and fast. Elle manages to steal the office key again and slips it to Miles. Then Kimberly steps up in a big way, faking a peanut allergy so convincingly that Anderson has no choice but to leave in search of an EpiPen.
That’s Miles’ window. He rushes into Anderson’s office and starts photographing the financial records while Dustin keeps watch outside. Back in the detention room, Elle can’t resist teasing Liz and Kimberly about a possible spark between them, which both girls immediately deny. But the moment turns urgent when Dustin warns that Anderson is coming back and Miles still hasn’t made it out. Thinking fast, Elle pulls the fire alarm to buy him an escape route.
Here’s where the episode throws its biggest curveball. While inside the office, Miles spots a Polaroid photo of a woman and a young girl sitting among Anderson’s things. Right as he’s about to snap a picture of it, the sprinklers kick in and wash away whatever note was written on the photo, erasing a clue before anyone can fully read it. Just when it feels like the episode might wrap on that theory, Liz bursts in with news that changes everything: Donna has been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the school. The Episode Review: Elle Just Pulled Off Its Best Ensemble Episode Yet, But That Twist Ending Changes Everything
Going into this episode, I fully expected the mystery woman and child in that Polaroid to turn out to be Donna and Liz. That would’ve been the obvious twist. But the show clearly isn’t going for obvious here, and I think that’s a smart choice. Given that Elle spotted that same orange jacket in Anderson’s office earlier this season, my gut says he’s still actively connected to whoever this woman is, and that this isn’t some old, buried secret.
My current theory? I’m leaning toward Ms. Burke. She was at school on a day she had no real reason to be there, the same day as Anderson, and that kind of coincidence rarely means nothing in a show like this. If the writers are setting her up as the other woman, it would explain a lot about why Anderson has been so quick to make problems disappear all season.
And can we talk about that ending for a second? Donna getting arrested in the final moments genuinely caught me off guard. It’s one of those twists that reframes everything you just watched, suddenly all that talk about Anderson pocketing money feels a lot murkier, because now it’s just as possible Donna was somehow involved, whether willingly or not. Either way, Principal Anderson clearly knows the kids are onto something now, and that alone raises the stakes heading into the final stretch of the season.
The dynamic between Kimberly and Liz was probably my favorite subplot in this episode. When Elle teased them about liking each other and they both immediately denied it, it felt less like an honest reaction and more like two people deflecting hard just to get Elle to drop it. Kimberly especially seems conflicted, and honestly, that tracks given what we know about her strict, religious upbringing. I’d love to see the show slow down and actually explore that tension instead of using it purely for comic relief.
If I’m being nitpicky, the zodiac sign subplot didn’t quite land for me in this episode. It felt like a lot of buildup, Elle discovering she’s a cusp sign, the whole conversation with Eva, for something that doesn’t pay off yet. I’m hoping this becomes relevant in the final two episodes, because right now it reads as a detour rather than something meaningful to the bigger story. Fingers crossed it ties back into the mystery in a way that actually justifies the screen time.
Overall, this episode does a great job balancing lighthearted school-heist energy with genuinely unsettling reveals. It’s fun watching the group scheme their way through detention, but the show never lets you forget there’s something much darker brewing underneath all of it.
