The Ordinary Jackpot Episode 4 recap: this is the hour where the workplace drama stops simmering and starts to boil. Eun-tae’s 1.3 billion won windfall is still doing nothing for his daily life, a mysterious new colleague arrives on Team 5, and Jung Seon-hyeok’s resignation turns out to be far bigger than a simple career change.
Here’s everything that happened, followed by my honest thoughts on where the K-drama stands after four episodes.
The Episode 4 Recap
A Fortune That Doesn’t Change Anything (Yet)
The episode opens with Eun-tae admitting that 1.3 billion won isn’t enough to overhaul his life, so he keeps showing up to work like always. Around the same time, Jung Seon-hyeok hands in his resignation. When Department Head Park asks why, he says he’s worn out from the constant scramble for promotion and wants a fresh environment.
Over on Team 5, a new member is introduced: Jang Hyang-eun. She doesn’t ease in. Almost immediately, she hands Ji-hye a long list of data to compile. Eun-tae then checks in with Hae-joo, hoping to learn more about the newcomer, but Hae-joo doesn’t have much to share. Eun-tae mentions that Hyang-eun will be handling the centre, and Hae-joo points out the obvious problem: Ji-hye used to be in charge of it, and she may not take the change well.
Hyang-eun’s Unexplained Return From China
Later, Department Head Park pulls Hyang-eun aside with a question that’s been bugging her. All personnel transfers from China were frozen, so how did Hyang-eun get back to South Korea? Hyang-eun says nothing. Park doesn’t bother hiding her suspicion, though she still tells the new hire to work hard.
We then get a flashback to two months earlier. Hyang-eun is alone in an office, copying a list of trading clients onto a flash drive, when someone walks in. The scene cuts away there, and I’ll admit it left me itching for answers.
Gi-tae’s Secret Meeting and the Birth of JSH Apparel
Gi-tae visits the department stores to see how the new Laknes section is coming along and to talk with the construction workers. Once he’s finished, he tells Jun-ho he’ll wander through the rest of the store on his own. That’s a cover. He’s actually there to meet Jung Seon-hyeok.
Meanwhile, Ji-hye skips the group lunch to stay behind and work on her report. Elsewhere, Seon-hyeok walks into an office labeled JSH Apparel and takes a seat in the CEO’s chair. Yes, he has a brand-new business. He phones a man named Sponza in Mantua, Italy, and asks whether Eun-tae’s company, Hongsung International, has been in touch. Sponza tells him to relax and promises to turn Hongsung down even if they do come knocking.
Karaoke, Drinks, and Director Cha
Eun-tae, Jun-ho, and Gi-tae sit down with a woman named Director Cha and two of her colleagues. Their goal is to persuade her to run the new Laknes store, even though another brand has already made her an offer. Drinks and karaoke follow, and it takes a lot of charm from Jun-ho, but his buttering up finally works.
Afterward, the three men have a quieter meal on their own, and Eun-tae drops something heavy: he knows Gi-tae is thinking about leaving. A flashback explains how. Director Cha had spotted Seon-hyeok and Gi-tae talking at the department store and passed the information to Eun-tae at the karaoke bar. Gi-tae then adds that Seon-hyeok has approached at least four other Hongsung employees.
The Phone Call Eun-tae Already Saw Coming
Another flashback shows a conversation between Seon-hyeok and Eun-tae. Back then, Seon-hyeok insisted he had no plans after quitting, but he did ask Eun-tae not to be too disappointed in him if their paths crossed at work. Looking back, that request says everything.
In the present, Seon-hyeok calls Eun-tae, who lets him know he’s already figured out the truth. Seon-hyeok offers him a spot at the new company anyway, arguing that Hongsung doesn’t develop its people. Eun-tae turns him down.
Ji-hye’s Report and the Rooftop Talk
The next day, Ji-hye presents a full report covering every brand the team is handling. Hyang-eun is caught off guard, since she only wanted a simple document. Eun-tae tells Ji-hye she did a good job, yet she tears up anyway.
He brings her to the roof and confesses he hadn’t realized how hard she was working out of anxiety. He gives her a flash drive containing her report and tells her to value herself. He also makes a promise: if Laknes succeeds, he’ll have the leverage to ask management to convert her from a contractor to a full-time employee.
Back inside, Hyang-eun asks why Eun-tae hasn’t questioned her about what happened in China. His answer is simple. He knows she’ll tell him when she’s ready.
The Shoe Select Shop Plan and an Unexpected Entrance
Department Head Park calls the team leaders together to talk about Seon-hyeok’s new business. He’s stopped coming to work even though he still has a few days left on his notice. Deputy Director Jang presents one of Eun-tae’s ideas: open a shoe select shop and place bulk orders with the company in Mantua, making Hongsung one of its biggest clients and pushing Seon-hyeok out of the picture.
Park loves it. She assigns the job to Eun-tae and tells him to prepare for a business trip to Mantua. Once the meeting wraps, the other team leaders start arguing among themselves. Deputy Director Jang steps in to break it up, and right then, Jung Seon-hyeok walks into the room. Eun-tae’s narration closes the scene by noting that in a workplace, everyone affects everyone else.
Epilogue: Ji-hye’s Good Day
The episode ends on a lighter note. Ji-hye receives her payment from Hongsung and goes shopping. Later, she gushes about the assistant manager to a friend over the phone. She’s clearly delighted that Eun-tae said she did a good job.
My Take: A Friendship Turns Into a Fight
The Seon-hyeok Twist Lands Hard
The Ordinary Jackpot Episode 4 moves the story forward in a way I found genuinely interesting. Eun-tae and his team keep working side by side, adjusting to a new colleague and pushing the Laknes deal along. Hyang-eun is a fun addition. Her no-nonsense attitude, combined with the cloud of mystery hanging over her time in China, gives Team 5 a spark it didn’t have before.
But the real jolt is Seon-hyeok. He isn’t simply quitting. He’s already got an office, staff, and clients, all built with Hongsung’s resources. My jaw dropped a little when he sat down in that CEO chair. This creates a rift in a long friendship, and Eun-tae now has to work directly against someone he trusted. What I liked is how fast Eun-tae comes up with a counter-strategy. It feels like we’re heading toward a real head-to-head between the two.
Strong Characters, Drab Visuals
On the whole, the visuals still feel a bit drab, and I wish the show gave its world a little more texture. What keeps me hooked is the character work. The writing makes every employee feel like a real, three-dimensional person, and that’s easily the show’s biggest strength right now. The rooftop scene with Ji-hye is a good example of how small, human moments do the heavy lifting here.
The open question is whether that’s enough. It remains to be seen whether this momentum can carry the whole drama, but for now, I’m still along for the ride.
