Star City Season 1 Episode 4 Recap – Episode 4 of Star City pushes several storylines forward at once, but the biggest development comes from the investigation into the sabotage case. As secrets pile up and suspicions spread through Star City, one character gets dangerously close to uncovering the truth.
Star City Episode 4 Recap
The episode opens by revealing more about the American operation working behind the scenes. Through surveillance photos collected over the years, we see evidence of Valya and Tanya’s relationship being documented and monitored. At first, it seems Tanya was the primary target.
The Americans were interested in her because of her love for Western music, something prohibited in the Soviet Union. However, they eventually realized Valya was the more useful asset. Rather than recruit Tanya directly, they chose to pressure Valya by threatening to expose her. Faced with that threat, he was forced into cooperation.
Tanya has no idea any of this is happening.
Instead, she becomes increasingly convinced that her husband is cheating on her after what she witnessed previously. Her suspicions push her to search through his belongings, hoping to find proof of an affair. She comes up empty-handed, but her doubts remain.
Meanwhile, attention shifts back to the spacecraft investigation. Lyudmilla oversees the dismantling of the damaged craft alongside the Chief Designer. The examination uncovers evidence that points toward espionage rather than sabotage.
During the inspection, Sergei discovers a micro-transmitter hidden within the craft. The device appears to have been added after construction, suggesting outside interference. While the discovery is significant, the Chief Designer is far more irritated by Lyudmilla’s actions during the mission. He openly criticizes her for forcing the reboot and believes her interference put the entire operation at risk.
A new arrival also enters the story.
Lakshmi Chadra arrives in Star City from India, but her introduction is far from welcoming. She struggles to find acceptance among her colleagues, while her husband Manu grows increasingly paranoid about being monitored. Given everything happening in the background, his fears don’t seem entirely misplaced.
One evening, Lakshmi encounters the Chief Designer working late. Unaware of who he really is at first, she speaks candidly about feeling isolated and pushed aside. Their conversation eventually turns toward the Venus project, and that’s when she learns his true role. Impressed by her abilities, he invites her to join the effort to reach Venus.
Back at the investigation, Lyudmilla assigns Irina a critical task. She wants her to trace the origin of the transmitter and even equips her with a handgun before sending her out.
While Irina begins her search, Lyudmilla continues questioning engineers and scientists. She’s determined to identify the person responsible for planting the device, completely unaware that Valya is the man she’s looking for.
Elsewhere, Star City mourns the loss of Arseni.
His funeral casts a shadow over everyone, especially Sasha. The tragedy continues to haunt him, and he struggles to cope with the guilt he feels as the pilot involved in the mission. His nightmares and self-recrimination make it clear that he’s carrying a heavy burden.
Watching Sasha unravel is difficult. He desperately wants to comfort his wife but can barely manage his own emotions.
Valya notices Sasha spiraling and pulls him aside before he says something dangerous. He tells him that nobody is responsible for anything except their own survival. Hearing those words from Valya carries an extra layer of meaning, considering the secrets he’s hiding.
At the same time, Anastasia continues her public appearances across the country. She inspires audiences with stories about walking on the moon and serves as a powerful symbol for the Soviet program.
Yet beneath the speeches, frustration is growing.
The more she travels, the more disconnected she feels from the life she actually wants. A painful realization begins to settle in: she may never return to space.
Tanya’s suspicions about Valya continue to consume her. Looking for answers, she first talks with Sasha and later invites Irina over to discuss what she believes is her husband’s infidelity.
Before meeting Tanya, however, Irina continues her investigation. While following leads connected to the transmitter, she discovers someone burning documents inside a supply room. A significant amount of evidence is destroyed before she arrives, but she manages to interrupt the process and chase the person away before everything is lost.
Meanwhile, the Chief Designer makes an important decision regarding the upcoming mission.
Since both Sasha and Pavel have been grounded from future assignments, he sees them as ideal candidates for a new operation. He gathers them together with Lakshmi and announces that the launch will take place in only three days. The mission will also rely on Lakshmi’s specially designed life-support system.
The pace of the Venus project suddenly becomes much more urgent.
As preparations continue, Lyudmilla reaches her own conclusion regarding the mole. After reviewing the available evidence, she becomes convinced that Sergei is responsible.
The accusation comes swiftly.
In front of everyone, Sergei is arrested and taken away to prison, leaving little room for him to defend himself.
The episode saves its biggest moment for the final scenes.
Irina eventually arrives at Tanya’s home, where the two women discuss Tanya’s concerns about Valya. During the visit, Irina steps into the bathroom.
There, she makes a discovery that changes everything.
Hidden inside a perfume bottle is the spring from the transmitter.
The look of the puzzle is suddenly much clearer.
Review: A Strong Episode Built on Suspicion and Irony
Star City Season 1 Episode 4 does a great job tightening the noose around Valya without actually exposing him yet. What makes his storyline work so well is the tragic irony at its center. Tanya believes her husband is betraying her through an affair, while the truth is that many of his actions stem from his desire to protect her.
That emotional misunderstanding gives the episode much of its tension.
I also liked how the series expanded its world through Lakshmi’s introduction. Her arrival brings fresh energy to the story, while the accelerated timeline for the Venus mission raises the stakes considerably.
The emotional fallout from Arseni’s death continues to affect both Sasha and Anastasia. Neither character seems emotionally stable right now, and their growing frustration adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile situation.
The standout moment, though, is Irina’s discovery at the end. My jaw dropped when she found the transmitter component hidden in Tanya’s home. After spending the entire episode chasing clues, she finally uncovers something concrete, and it immediately places Valya in serious danger.
With Sergei already imprisoned, the investigation moving forward, and the Venus mission only days away, Star City leaves nearly every major storyline hanging by a thread. That’s exactly the kind of cliffhanger that makes it hard not to jump straight into the next episode.
