Every Year After Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Review: Percy Returns to Barry’s Bay and Faces Her Past

Every Year After Season 1 Episode 1 Recap – The premiere of Every Year After wastes no time throwing Percy Fraser back into a chapter of her life she’s spent years trying to leave behind. What starts as a celebration quickly turns into an emotional homecoming filled with grief, regret, and unresolved feelings.

Percy Receives Devastating News

The episode opens at Chantal Thompson’s engagement party, where Percy gives a heartfelt speech about love. While celebrating her best friend’s future with Drew, her thoughts drift toward her own complicated history with Sam Florek. Even during a happy occasion, it’s clear that part of her mind remains stuck in the past.

Later that night, Percy leaves the party planning to meet up with Drew’s half-brother, Jake. Before anything can happen, she receives a phone call from Charlie Florek, her childhood friend and Sam’s brother. Charlie delivers heartbreaking news: their mother, Sue, has died after battling a terminal illness.

The news hits Percy hard. Sue was much more than a neighbor to her. She was a mother figure, someone who played a major role in her life growing up. As Charlie encourages her to attend the memorial service in Barry’s Bay, Percy realizes just how much time has passed since she last reached out.

After hanging up, she suffers a panic attack, showing just how deeply the loss affects her.

The Return to Barry’s Bay

The following morning, Percy talks with Chantal about Charlie’s call. Chantal immediately worries about what returning to Barry’s Bay might do to her friend. After all, Percy spent years trying to move on from whatever happened between her and Sam.

Percy admits something that feels even more painful: she hasn’t simply been trying to move on. She’s spent much of the last decade living with regret.

Drew encourages Chantal to accompany Percy to Barry’s Bay, and the two begin the trip together.

During the drive, memories from 2011 begin surfacing. Percy remembers meeting Charlie and Sam Florek for the first time after moving in nearby. Charlie enthusiastically introduced himself and his brother, setting the foundation for friendships that would shape her life.

Back in the present, Percy tells Chantal how much Sue meant to her. The closer they get to Barry’s Bay, the harder it becomes for Percy to keep her emotions under control.

Memories Come Flooding Back

After arriving, Percy becomes overwhelmed by the idea of seeing the Florek family again. While Chantal handles their hotel arrangements, Percy wanders toward the lake.

There, memories begin appearing around every corner. She notices two chairs that remind her of moments spent with Sue. Then she spots Sam standing on a pier. The second she sees him, she turns around and runs before he can notice her.

Honestly, this moment says everything about Percy’s emotional state. She hasn’t even spoken to Sam yet, but simply seeing him is enough to send her fleeing.

A flashback takes us back to the summer of 2011. Percy and Sam begin spending more time together, talking about everything from her falling out with Delilah to life in Barry’s Bay.

Sam introduces her to The Tavern, the restaurant owned by Sue. A horror movie marathon helps bring them closer, and before long Percy becomes a regular part of the Florek family’s life.

Tensions Rise Around Town

In the present day, things aren’t exactly peaceful within the Florek family either.

Sam and Charlie clash over Sue’s final months. Sam points out that he spent the last six months caring for their mother, while Charlie was largely absent. The argument quickly escalates before Sam storms away.

Meanwhile, Percy unexpectedly runs into Delilah. Delilah reveals that she now owns a vacation home in Barry’s Bay with her husband, Whit.

Not long after, Charlie and Percy finally reunite. The warmth of their old friendship is still there, but so is plenty of awkwardness.

Things don’t get much easier when Chantal and Percy arrive at their accommodations. The hotel reservation turns out to be a motel, run by Sam’s childhood friend Jordie. Percy greets him, but Jordie pretends not to know who she is.

At the same time, Chantal becomes frustrated by booking issues and is even less thrilled when she’s told she’ll need to share a room.

Elsewhere, Delilah voices concerns about Charlie inviting Percy back. She worries about Sam’s reaction once he learns she’s in town.

Percy Struggles to Face Her Past

Later, Chantal opens up about her own insecurities. Despite being engaged to Drew, she admits that his seemingly perfect life sometimes leaves her feeling overwhelmed. To clear their heads, the two decide to go running.

That plan quickly goes sideways when Percy spots Sam approaching and immediately hides from him. It’s becoming impossible to ignore just how much fear she carries whenever Sam enters the picture.

Afterward, Percy returns to her parents’ former home and notices a demolition sign posted outside. The sight triggers another emotional breakdown. Unable to handle the flood of memories, she enters the lake in an attempt to calm herself. Instead, she begins drowning.

Thankfully, Charlie spots her and pulls her to safety.

Once she settles down, Percy finally admits the truth. Barry’s Bay overwhelms her. She’s spent years trying to outrun mistakes she still hasn’t come to terms with.

Sam Learns Percy Is Back

At The Tavern, Jordie eventually tells Sam that Percy has returned.

Sam is furious that Charlie invited her without discussing it first. When he confronts his brother, their argument becomes physical, ending with Sam shoving Charlie into the lake.

What stood out to me here is that Sam’s anger doesn’t sound like indifference. If anything, it sounds like the opposite.

He tells Charlie that Percy wasn’t just his girlfriend. She was his best friend and part of their family. That line carries a lot of weight considering they haven’t seen each other in years.

Another flashback reinforces how close they once were. Sue treats Sam and Percy to a meal, and afterward they wash dishes together. During the conversation, Sam talks about his late father.

Percy reassures him that he can always talk to her. She then gives him a friendship bracelet, and they promise never to remove it.

It’s a simple scene, but it quietly becomes one of the episode’s most meaningful moments.

Percy and Sam Finally Meet Again

Back in the present, Percy takes out the friendship bracelet and looks at it for a moment before putting it away.

Eventually, she gathers enough courage to visit The Tavern.

Walking through the restaurant brings back countless memories. When she reaches the kitchen, she finds Sam washing dishes.

Their long-awaited reunion is surprisingly gentle.

Percy breaks down in tears, and instead of pushing her away, Sam comforts her. He thanks her for coming to Sue’s memorial, and Percy offers to help with the dishes.

The awkwardness between them remains, but beneath it there’s still familiarity.

Meanwhile, another problem is quietly brewing. Delilah arrives and asks Charlie whether Sam knows she plans to purchase The Tavern. Charlie admits he hasn’t told him yet and asks for more time.

As Percy and Sam continue washing dishes together, the tension between them remains impossible to ignore.

Then comes the episode’s final surprise.

Sam’s girlfriend arrives.

He introduces Taylor to Percy, leaving her visibly caught off guard as the episode comes to an end.

Review: A Strong Emotional Start Filled With Unresolved Feelings

Every Year After Season 1 Episode 1 begin on such an emotional note. Right away, the series establishes that grief is only part of the story. Underneath everything is a decade’s worth of unfinished business between Percy and Sam.

The similarities to The Summer I Turned Pretty are hard to miss at first glance. There’s the lakeside setting, the flashbacks, and the complicated relationships built around a shared history. Still, this story seems focused on its own emotional wounds rather than a traditional love triangle.

What interested me most was Percy herself. In both timelines, she often feels disconnected from the people around her. Barry’s Bay is supposed to feel like home, yet she moves through it like someone carrying a weight she can’t put down. What’s striking is that whether it’s 2011 or the present day, Sam consistently seems to be the person who helps ground her.

I also really enjoyed the early interactions between Chantal and Jordie. Their scenes add some much-needed lighter energy to an episode packed with heavy emotions.

The ending sets up several interesting questions. Percy has finally come face-to-face with Sam again, but now she has to deal with the reality that he’s dating Taylor. Add Delilah’s plans for The Tavern and the growing tension between Sam and Charlie, and there’s already plenty of drama waiting beneath the surface.

For a first episode, this did a great job pulling me into Percy’s world. The reunion between Percy and Sam alone was enough to keep me curious about where the story goes next.
