When A Man of Reason premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, it immediately drew attention for one reason: Jung Woo-Sung stepping behind the camera as a director while also leading the film as its main character.
The crime action drama, which later arrived in theaters in 2023, brings together a strong cast including Jung Woo-Sung, Kim Nam-Gil, and Park Sung-Woong. But beneath the explosions and violent confrontations, the film tells a quieter story about a man trying to reclaim a life that was stolen from him.
After spending a decade in prison for a crime connected to a criminal organization, Soo Hyeok walks back into the world with only one wish, to live a normal life. Unfortunately, the past has other plans.
Soo Hyeok’s Return Turns Into a Tragedy
After ten years behind bars, Soo Hyeok finally regains his freedom. During that time, he took the blame for his boss, Eung Kook, which kept the criminal organization safe.
When he reunites with Min Seo, the woman he once loved, he discovers something that completely changes his life, he has a ten-year-old daughter he never knew existed.
The revelation awakens something in Soo Hyeok. For the first time, he begins to imagine a life outside crime. He decides to leave the organization and live quietly as a father.
But the reunion quickly turns heartbreaking.
Min Seo suddenly collapses, and Soo Hyeok learns she has been suffering from blood cancer, with severe anemia causing frequent fainting. As he rushes her to the hospital, their car is attacked by hired killers. The violent ambush only makes things worse, and when they finally reach the hospital, Min Seo cannot be saved.
Her death leaves Soo Hyeok with a painful responsibility, protecting the daughter he barely had time to know.
The Assassins Who Won’t Stop Hunting Him
Soo Hyeok’s decision to leave the organization does not sit well with Eung Kook. To prevent him from walking away, Eung Kook hires a ruthless assassin named Woo Jin, played with unsettling energy by Kim Nam-Gil.
Woo Jin doesn’t work alone. His unpredictable partner Jin Ah is just as dangerous, making the duo a chaotic force of violence.
Their mission is simple: eliminate Soo Hyeok.
The attacks become increasingly brutal. At one point, Jin Ah kidnaps Soo Hyeok’s daughter, forcing him into a desperate rescue mission. When he finally reaches her, he realizes the entire building is rigged with explosives.
With time running out, Soo Hyeok manages to hide with his daughter in a swimming pool, using the water as protection when the explosives detonate. Against the odds, the two survive.
It’s a moment that shows just how far Soo Hyeok is willing to go to protect the only family he has left.
A Violent Turn of Events
After planting the explosives, Woo Jin and Jin Ah attempt to escape. However, fate takes an unexpected turn.
Their car is suddenly rammed by another vehicle driven by Sung Joon, the very man who hired them.
Sung Joon had been tracking Soo Hyeok’s vehicle using a GPS device and mistakenly believed Soo Hyeok was inside the car. Instead, he ends up crashing into his own hired killers.
The collision leaves Woo Jin and Jin Ah severely injured.
Soo Hyeok later sees them in this state but chooses not to intervene. Whether they ultimately survive their injuries is never confirmed in the film.
Betrayal Leads to One Last Revenge
Sung Joon’s real personality is revealed when he realizes the mistake he made.
Rather than helping the assassins he hired, he decides to eliminate them instead. His reasoning is simple, if they failed their mission, he doesn’t want to pay them.
But Sung Joon underestimates Jin Ah.
Even while gravely wounded, she manages to fire a nail gun directly into Sung Joon’s neck. The sudden retaliation leaves him bleeding and helpless.
Soo Hyeok witnesses the aftermath but once again walks away, leaving Sung Joon to face the consequences of his own actions.
Did Soo Hyeok Finally Escape the Criminal World?
The final scene of A Man of Reason shifts dramatically in tone.
Instead of violence, the film ends with a quiet moment in a park. Soo Hyeok is seen sitting beside his daughter, enjoying a peaceful day together. The girl, who initially struggled to accept him, now appears comfortable with her father.
For Soo Hyeok, this moment represents everything he has been fighting for, a chance to live as a normal parent.
At least for now, it seems he has successfully stepped away from the criminal life.
However, the film intentionally leaves several questions unanswered. The fates of Woo Jin, Jin Ah, and Sung Joon remain unclear. And more importantly, the story never confirms whether Eung Kook has truly given up on chasing Soo Hyeok.
A Personal Theory About the Ending
The ambiguous ending feels deliberate.
Rather than tying up every loose thread, the film suggests that escaping a criminal past is never truly simple. Even though Soo Hyeok survives and manages to build a connection with his daughter, the shadow of his old life still exists somewhere in the background.
It’s possible that Eung Kook may eventually return, which could open the door for a continuation of the story.
But thematically, the ending works as a symbolic victory. Soo Hyeok may not have erased his past, but he has taken the first real step toward a different future.
Final Thoughts and Rating
A Man of Reason blends intense action with a surprisingly emotional core. While the film contains many explosive sequences and brutal confrontations, its real focus lies in Soo Hyeok’s desire for redemption.
Jung Woo-Sung delivers a restrained performance that fits the character well, a man who carries guilt, regret, and determination all at once. Meanwhile, Kim Nam-Gil’s chaotic portrayal of Woo Jin adds an unpredictable edge to the story.
The narrative occasionally leaves questions unanswered, but that ambiguity also adds to the film’s lingering impact.
In the end, A Man of Reason is less about revenge and more about whether someone who has lived in violence can truly start over.
