Reacher Season 4 Episode 6, titled “Plum Out of Luck,” open with Amisha and Lila holding Jacob at knifepoint. Their demand is simple: hand over the drive. Reacher, weighing his options and clearly not thrilled about it, does exactly that.
But before anyone can breathe, Russell Plum walks in on the chaos. His timing couldn’t be worse. Things spiral fast from there, Russell takes a bullet, someone tosses a smoke bomb into the mix, and suddenly the authorities are closing in on the location. It’s the kind of scene that turns a tense standoff into an all-out scramble, and it gives Jacob just enough cover to grab Russell and pull him out of the line of fire. Down in the basement, Reacher and Tamara aren’t so lucky, Amisha and Lila slip away in the confusion, and just like that, the girls are gone again.
Jacob Makes a Risky Call for Russell
Once the shootout ends and every one of the initial troops is dead, the group has a decision to make. Jacob wants to get Russell to a hospital, full stop. Tamara and Reacher push back hard, showing up at an ER with a gunshot wound means questions, and questions are the last thing any of them can afford right now. Jacob doesn’t budge. He’s not going to let Russell die over paperwork and suspicion, so he drives off with him regardless of the risk.
Right before they go, though, Russell manages to get one crucial piece of information out. Weak and barely holding on, he tells them the chemist in the photo has a name: Leo Ahlquist. It’s a small detail, but it’s the thread that pulls the rest of the episode forward.
Jacob gets Russell to the hospital, only to be met at the entrance by two cops who immediately start questioning him about what happened. Meanwhile, Reacher’s attempt to track down Leo hits an immediate wall, he, Tamara, Russell, and Jacob are all officially Wanted at this point, their faces splashed across the local news for the entire city to see. That’s not exactly ideal conditions for a manhunt of your own.
Sampson Closes In While Tamara Traces Leo to Plutus Chemical
Sampson, sharp as ever, figures out exactly where Reacher is headed and moves to cut him off. At the same time, Tamara puts the pieces together and realizes Leo is the CEO of Plutus Chemical. The company’s headquarters sits about an hour and a half away, which leaves Reacher and Tamara with one option: stow away in the luggage compartment of a bus bound for Dover.
Back at the hospital, Jacob’s situation gets worse by the minute. Cops recognize his face from the news and start hunting him through the halls. He manages to dodge them, but he knows he can’t keep doing this alone, so he calls Monty for backup. Monty agrees to come get him, but only if Jacob promises to talk to a lawyer once he’s out. When Monty arrives, he immediately starts grilling Jacob for answers, buying just enough time for Detective Docherty to show up with orders to arrest him. It’s a genuinely uncomfortable moment, and Jacob does everything he can to talk Docherty down and get him to see the bigger picture.
Tamara Opens Up About Why She Left the Force
The bus ride to Dover turns into an unexpectedly personal moment. Tucked away among the suitcases, Tamara finally tells Reacher why she walked away from being a cop. It goes back to a case where a wealthy young man assaulted a waitress badly enough to leave her with serious injuries, and there was CCTV footage proving it. Open and shut, you’d think. Except Tamara’s superiors told her to drop it. The kid’s parents were major donors to the Mayor, and that connection was apparently enough to make the whole thing disappear.
Tamara couldn’t let it go, though. She waited for the guy outside the firm where he was interning and arrested him publicly, in front of everyone. The department buried her for it afterward, and that’s when she started going numb to the job. It wasn’t until she got pulled into this case with Reacher that she started feeling that old drive and hunger for justice again, which honestly adds a lot of weight to why she’s been fighting so hard this season.
The Auction, the Drive, and What’s Really on It
Elsewhere in the episode, Amisha and Lila show up in Philadelphia, apparently gearing up for some kind of illegal auction. It turns out the thumb drive isn’t just holding a photo, there’s a code embedded in it too. They bring in an AI to try cracking it, but by the end of the episode, it’s still not clear exactly what’s hidden inside.
Leo Ahlquist, a Fake Lawyer, and a Lost Hand
Reacher and Tamara finally make it to Dover to confront Leo, and they catch him mid-cover-up, literally upstairs destroying hard drives and evidence. Leo doesn’t take the interruption well. He sends his secretary, Miranda, to fetch his “lawyer,” a man named Vance. Except Vance isn’t a lawyer at all, he’s one of the mercenaries from the bowling alley confrontation earlier in the season.
Leo drops another bombshell in the process: Cahill had called him that very morning to warn him Reacher was coming. That’s how ready Vance and his crew were when they arrived and immediately held Reacher and Tamara at gunpoint. A fight breaks out, and it does not go smoothly for our heroes. Reacher gets tasered and Tamara is knocked out cold, though it’s not a total loss, Vance walks away missing one of his hands in the process. When Reacher finally comes to, he’s handcuffed in the back of a van, heading straight for the woods.
My Take: A Brutal, Momentum-Building Hour That Sets Up a Massive Cliffhanger
Reacher Season 4 Episode 6 hits hard, and I mean that literally. Every character we care about ends this hour worse off than they started it, and that’s exactly what makes “Plum Out of Luck” work as well as it does. Russell’s fate is genuinely uncertain now, with him hospitalized, it looks like he could be out of commission for the rest of the season, which shifts a lot of weight onto Jacob. Watching him try to talk Docherty around instead of just running suggests he might end up being the wildcard the group needs going forward.
The Leo Ahlquist thread is the real engine of this episode, and I appreciated how the show handled it. Reacher and Tamara do get their answer, they track Leo down, they confirm he’s connected to Plutus Chemical, but the show smartly keeps the actual contents of that drive a mystery. Whatever’s hidden inside it is clearly worth killing over, and there’s something satisfying about how the show is hiding critical information in plain sight rather than dumping exposition on us.
The action in this one also stepped up noticeably. Vance losing his hand was genuinely gnarly to watch, not gratuitous, just brutal in a way that felt earned given everything Vance and his crew have put this group through. The warehouse fight earlier in the episode carries similar energy, and both sequences do a lot to build tension heading into the final stretch. By the time Reacher wakes up cuffed in that van, you’re left with one obvious question hanging over the whole episode: is he actually going to get out of these woods in one piece?
