Episode 9 Recap
The Prague Photo That Changes Everything
The episode opens with Detective Martin sending Pi-o a photo: his mother talking to a security guard ahead of the 2017 Harmonie Competition in Prague. Pi-o is stunned. He tries to reason with the detective about his mother’s role in Jeong-yo’s kidnapping, a plot that went south when Jeong-yo tried to run away.
That night Pi-o storms home and calls his mother, who is out having drinks with Ji-eun’s mother. When Ji-hye comes home drunk, he confronts her. She denies it at first. Then he shows her the picture, and she finally admits she hired a kidnapper “to help” Pi-o.
Ji-hye’s Confession and Her Terrifying Ultimatum
Ji-hye’s reasoning is chilling in how matter-of-fact it is. She wanted to protect Pi-o’s chances of winning, and that was only possible if Jeong-yo didn’t compete. When Pi-o points out that she wrecked Jeong-yo’s life, she brushes it off and says nobody can change the past. Coming clean, she argues, would only destroy Pi-o’s future as a pianist.
Pi-o begs her to tell the truth and apologize to Jeong-yo. Her answer is the worst possible one: if Pi-o tells anyone, she’ll end her own life. Trapped, Pi-o does the only thing he can and pours his frustration into the piano.
Pi-o Tries to Make Peace With Jeong-yo
The next morning Pi-o shows up at Jeong-yo’s house and tells him he only won the Harmonie Competition years ago because Jeong-yo gave him his sheet music. This is where Jeong-yo’s frustration boils over. Pi-o is willing to credit him in private but won’t say a word about it in public.
Jeong-yo tells him he doesn’t really care about the competition. But as Pi-o leaves, Jeong-yo can see that something heavy is weighing on him.
A Concerto With Strings Attached
Later that day Jeong-yo turns up at Pi-o’s house with a request: be the soloist for his upcoming concerto. Pi-o, overwhelmed by everything his mother has put him through, refuses. Jeong-yo doesn’t back down. He asks Pi-o to play it for him, as a way to make up for using his sheet music to win all those years ago.
As he leaves, Jeong-yo drops the ultimatum: no Pi-o, no concerto. Ji-hye, watching nervously, wonders whether her son told Jeong-yo the truth. Pi-o ignores her and keeps thinking about the request. After a string of texts from Jeong-yo, he gives in and agrees to be the soloist.
Seung-woon Reads the Score
Jeong-yo brings the finished piece to Seung-woon, who is proud of the composition and wonders aloud whether Jeong-yo wrote it with someone in mind. Jeong-yo asks to premiere it at the orchestra’s 80th anniversary festival. Seung-woon agrees, but hesitates when he hears Pi-o will be the pianist. Jeong-yo defends Pi-o and asks him to trust him.
That evening, Seon-joo reads the piece and is moved. She tells Seung-woon that Pi-o is lucky to have Jeong-yo rooting for him, then brings up Seung-woon’s hatred for Pi-o. His reply is revealing: he says he sees the same hunger for music in Pi-o that he has himself, but adds that Pi-o doesn’t have the same talent.
An Album Pitch and an Awkward Group Dinner
At Eden Agency, Jae-in asks Jeong-yo whether he’d consider releasing an album with Pi-o. Jeong-yo is happy to collaborate. Ji-hye isn’t, and she insists Pi-o should stay away from Jeong-yo after everything. Pi-o asks his mother to back off, saying he owes it to Jeong-yo and wants to make it up to him.
The group later gathers to announce the concerto festival before dinner. Over the meal, Hyun-soo brings up Jeong-yo’s bond with Pi-o, and everyone teases the pair about their bromance. Jeong-yo asks Pi-o to play the piece for him once he’s able to practice. Pi-o skips the group’s after-hours hangout and heads home to rehearse.
Meanwhile, Ji-hye is drinking at a bar and calls Hyun-soo. He drives her home, and a very drunk Ji-hye asks him to keep Jeong-yo away from her son.
Seung-woon Wants to Step Down
Elsewhere, Seung-woon tells Seon-joo he wants to resign and hand the orchestra to Jeong-yo. She refuses, but he insists it’s time to let the younger generation take over. He then heads to rehearsal and lectures the musicians about feeling the emotion instead of just playing notes. While conducting, he starts feeling pain around his ribs.
Seon-joo tells Ji-hye about Seung-woon’s decision, and Ji-hye confronts her father. She says Jeong-yo is far too young and inexperienced. Seung-woon ignores her and asks her to let go of her hatred for Jeong-yo.
Rehearsals Get Tense
Jeong-yo meets Pi-o to check his progress and isn’t impressed. He asks Pi-o to rework the piece and interpret it better. The criticism stings, and Pi-o pushes himself to play as well as he possibly can. A few days later, Jeong-yo still isn’t satisfied and tells him to keep working until he can feel the rhythm with his soul.
Pi-o is upset by the vague instructions. Jae-in offers to talk to Jeong-yo for him, but Pi-o says he can handle it.
The Rehab Center and the Final Scene
That night Hyun-cheol tells Jeong-yo that his father isn’t at the rehabilitation center. Jeong-yo rushes over to look for him and runs into Ji-hye there. She lies and says she’s visiting someone. Jeong-yo and Hyun-cheol find Mr. Choi drinking at a restaurant, and Hyun-cheol tries to take him back to the hospital while Jeong-yo watches from a distance.
The next morning Ji-hye tells Pi-o she thinks Jeong-yo is faking his amnesia, based on her run-in with him at the rehab. Pi-o waves off her worries and asks her to stop following Jeong-yo.
The episode closes with Pi-o replaying his mother’s comment and linking it to his recent interactions with Jeong-yo. He goes to the concert hall where they used to hang out as kids to read the inscription Ji-hye saw Jeong-yo reading.
Episode 9 Review: Guilt, Secrets and a Romance That’s Still Missing
Rating: 7.5/10
Episode 9 is gripping, frustrating, and quietly heartbreaking all at once. At this stage, it feels like a BL drama with the romance missing. The angst and yearning were always there, and now these two are keeping secrets from each other and feeling guilty in silence, just like every other straight K-drama couple. What more could we ask for?
What Works
- The confession scene. Ji-hye admitting what she did, and then using her own life as a threat, is the most dramatic stretch of the episode. It also explains why Pi-o is suddenly so quiet and strained around everyone.
- Jeong-yo noticing everything. He can tell something is wrong with Pi-o, and that gives his “play this for me” request a layer beyond simple generosity.
- The concerto as a plot engine. Tying the festival, Pi-o’s guilt, and Seung-woon’s resignation together gives the story a clear ticking clock.
- Seung-woon’s rib pain. A small moment, but it plants a real worry in the middle of all the rehearsal drama.
What Doesn’t
- Jeong-yo’s feedback loops. Telling Pi-o to feel the rhythm with his soul, twice, is a lot of vague direction. I understand why Pi-o is upset, and it’s hard not to wonder if the story is stalling.
- The emotional paralysis. Pi-o carries the truth, the guilt, and his mother’s threat, yet he mostly reacts. I wanted him to push back harder.
- Seung-woon’s arrogance. Saying Pi-o is just as driven as he is but lacks the same talent is breathtakingly conceited. I hate Ji-hye’s character for sure, but she’s still far better than Seung-woon in my book.
My Theories (Pure Speculation)
Take these with a grain of salt, since the show hasn’t confirmed any of this. I noticed that Jeong-yo knows something is off with Pi-o, and I still think Seung-woon had something to do with the attack on Jeong-yo. Sure, Ji-hye ordered the kidnapping, but why did the kidnappers have guns?
It also seems clear to me that Seung-woon is dying and wants Jeong-yo to take over his legacy. I fear Jeong-yo might be Seung-woon’s biological son, which would make him Pi-o’s uncle. My sincere apologies to all the BL fans if this theory turns out to be true.
