Black Doves Season 2 Ending Explained – Katia, Reed, Kestrel & What Happens Next

Helen Webb has spent two seasons hiding who she is. In the Season 2 finale, “Peace Summit,” the lies finally collide with the people she’s lying to. If you reached the final scene with questions about Katia, Sam’s departure, Patrick’s business card and that last line from Wallace, here is how it all fits together. For the full story leading up to it, start with our Black Doves Season 2 recap, review and character analysis.

Spoiler warning: this article explains the entire finale.

How does Black Doves Season 2 end?

Sam hands Reed over to Kestrel alive, and Patrick tells him the contract is done. Then Kestrel strikes. Dani helps them knock out security and communications at the Black Doves headquarters, while at the peace summit the US envoy Cecile Mason and Katia Chernov are kidnapped on the way in, a car bomb goes off and the venue erupts in gunfire. Katia turns out to be Vita, Reed’s long-lost daughter and the person running Kestrel. She forces Helen, through an earpiece, to choose between killing Wallace and losing her children. Helen fires at the car window instead and tells Wallace to play dead. Vita is fatally wounded and dies in front of Reed, Helen and Sam rescue the children from a traitor nanny, Sam leaves for Italy, and Helen goes home to a husband who asks her to start with her real name. Cut to black.

Who is Katia Chernov, really?

Katia is Vita, the baby Reed left behind in East Berlin in 1988. After the Kestrel network was wiped out, Vita slipped away from the apartment and grew up in a Soviet orphanage. Her father, Franz, later rebuilt Kestrel with the goal of handing it to her, and that’s exactly what happened. Years later she appears as the wife of Alexi Chernov, the KGB officer Kestrel once worked with, which put her close to the people and secrets the Black Doves were guarding. Her aim wasn’t just to kill the mother who abandoned her. She wanted to destroy the whole organization, and forcing a Black Dove to assassinate the Prime Minister was the way to do it.

What was Wildflower?

Wildflower was Reed’s codename on her East Berlin mission. She was undercover inside Kestrel, living with Franz and their daughter, and reporting to her handler and lover, Peter Maddison. When she wanted out, she invented a bomb plot to convince the Black Doves to eliminate the network. The lie got most of Kestrel killed, along with Peter, who learned the truth and was shot by Reed. She then buried the evidence and told everyone that Franz and Vita were dead. Everything this season, from Ida’s death to the hunt for retired Black Doves, grows out of that single lie.

Why did Kestrel target the Black Doves?

Vita’s revenge needed more than one victim. Kestrel forced Sam to kill former Black Doves tied to the Berlin operation, one by one, and used footage of Helen killing Franz, a murder Reed ordered, to keep Sam in line. Kestrel also got people close to Helen: the nanny, Marie, planted in her household, and Dani, recruited after the Black Doves pushed her aside. The result was a pressure campaign that squeezed Helen and Sam from both directions until Reed was the last name on the list.

Why did Sam hand Reed over alive?

The show doesn’t spell it out, but the clues point to a moral line. Sam had several chances to kill Reed in Episode 5 and didn’t take them. Delivering her to Kestrel alive let him clear his debt without pulling the trigger on the woman who gave him the work he couldn’t walk away from. That is also my reading of why Vita wanted her alive, so she could confront her mother face to face. When Patrick offers Sam a permanent job afterward, Sam turns it down and warns him that the next meeting will end badly. It’s the clearest sign that Sam is done.

Does Sam leave for good?

It looks that way. Sam meets Helen in Trafalgar Square, apologizes for everything and says goodbye before heading back to Italy, where he’d found some peace earlier in the season in a village bar. Creator Joe Barton has said part of what he wanted to explore this year is what a happy ending even looks like for people in this line of work. Italy is Sam’s best answer so far, though the finale never says whether he stays gone.

What does Helen do in the car with Wallace?

Trapped in a parked car in an underground car park, Helen gets an earpiece and Katia’s voice: kill Wallace or the children die. Wallace has already noticed how calm she is and asks who Lily Morris really is. Helen admits that she was born under a different name, but says she doesn’t want him dead. She then fires her gun at the window, not at him, and tells him to stay quiet and pretend he’s dead so Katia believes the order was carried out. It’s the first time in two seasons that Helen picks her family over the organization, and that she lets Wallace see her mask drop.

Who is Marie, and what happens to her?

Marie is the Webb family nanny, and she’s been a Kestrel plant all along, sent to watch Helen’s household. She takes the children during the attack. Helen and Sam track her to London Zoo, where Helen kills her and brings the children back safely. The kids never realize how close they came to disaster.

Who dies in the finale?

  • Katia / Vita: wounded in the gunfire and dies in Reed’s presence after a final conversation.
  • Cecile Mason: killed by Vita as part of her plan to expose the Black Doves.
  • Dani: killed when a grenade goes off in an elevator at the Black Doves headquarters.
  • Marie: killed by Helen at London Zoo.

Reed, Helen, Sam, Wallace, Laila, Williams, Eleanor, Conteh and Patrick all survive the finale.

Does Wallace find out the truth?

He finds out that Helen isn’t who she says she is, and that’s a lot. By the end of Episode 5, MI5’s Perryman has already told him her real name is Lily Morris. In the finale Wallace protects her anyway, telling Perryman that Helen panicked and hid during the attack. Perryman clearly doesn’t believe him, and his suspicious look at Helen suggests he isn’t finished. When Helen gets home, Wallace asks her to begin with her name, and the show ends before she answers. Barton has called this a deliberate cliffhanger, saying the fallout from Wallace learning who his wife really is deserves its own story.

What happens to the Black Doves?

They survive, barely. Reed tells Helen that half the executive committee is gone, the headquarters has been compromised and the organization is basically starting over. Reed and Robert Conteh make a fragile truce, with Conteh apologizing for not trusting her. Helen pushes for more transparency and trust going forward, and Reed also gives her an extraction plan. The Black Doves are still standing, but they’ve been badly hurt.

Who is Patrick, and why does the business card matter?

Patrick is Kestrel’s recruiter and the man who forced Sam into the four-target contract. He walks away from the finale untouched. He crosses paths with Helen and gives her a card with a dove on it, which tells her Kestrel is still out there. Reed later says he’s been seen boarding a flight to Tokyo, and the Black Doves’ first priority is to find him. Kestrel lost Vita, but it didn’t lose its recruiter, which makes Patrick the most obvious thread for another season.

What about Williams, Eleanor and Laila?

They’re the unexpected heroes of the finale. Laila, Williams and Eleanor storm the Black Doves headquarters and fight their way through Kestrel’s attackers, helping beat back the attack. Earlier in the season, Williams and Eleanor had taken contracts to kill Sam and Laila, and the finale lets that quietly go. Their relationship, which began this season, is the one genuinely happy outcome.

Is there a Black Doves Season 3?

As of November 6, 2026, Netflix has not announced a third season. The ending sets one up well: Patrick is free, Kestrel continues without Vita, the Black Doves are rebuilding and Wallace is waiting for an answer. The wait between the first two seasons was nearly two years, so if it does happen, expect a long gap.
