The Ordinary Jackpot Episode 9 Recap & Review: Hongsung's Mole Trap Pays Off

Spoiler warning: this post covers everything that happens in The Ordinary Jackpot Episode 9, including the ending.

I’ll admit it: I expected Episode 9 of The Ordinary Jackpot to be a quiet setup hour before the finale. Instead, the tvN workplace drama starring Lee Jun-hyuk as Gong Eun-tae turned a single airport pickup into a full-blown corporate chess match, and the final five minutes had me grinning at my screen. If you want the complete Episode 9 recap of how Hongsung outplayed CGM, plus my honest review, you’re in the right place.

Martina Lands in Seoul and Refuses to Make Anything Easy

The Ordinary Jackpot Episode 9 opens with Eun-tae welcoming Martina, Head of Merchandising at Mantua, at the airport. She lives in Italy, but she’s Korean, which I didn’t see coming. He takes her straight to Hongsung, where he and Jun-ho pitch their new partnership, a plan to push into the Chinese market. They walk her through the deal with CGM, and Martina shuts it down fast: Mantua has zero interest in picking a fight with CGM.

Eun-tae doesn’t flinch. He points out that Mantua stands to lose a lot of East Asian buyers if it stays out of the picture, and that’s enough to get Martina to say she’ll think it over. In the meantime, she makes one request: assign a junior staff member to show her around the city. Eun-tae hands the job to Ji-hye.

Ji-hye’s Day From Hell (and One Very Expensive Bottle of Wine)

This is the stretch that made me wince the most. Martina asks Ji-hye to take her to the shop where Ji-hye buys her own clothes, so Ji-hye brings her to the department store she frequents, the one stocked with the latest trends. Martina picks Ji-hye’s outfit apart on the spot. She says it mashes together designs from two different brands and that Ji-hye hasn’t looked after the fabric properly. Her verdict is brutal: if you sell clothes for a living, you should know how to wear them.

Dinner doesn’t go any better. Ji-hye orders food and wine, and Martina points out how pricey the bottle is. Ji-hye says she’s had it before, and Martina fires back that someone who buys cheap clothes is either lying about that or living beyond her means. Ji-hye calls Eun-tae and tells him how Martina is behaving. He answers that they do need Martina but she doesn’t have to put up with anything unreasonable, because there’s no point doing business with someone who has them by the throat.

The ride to the hotel brings one more hit. Martina tells Ji-hye she should have prepared data on the Chinese market and on what Mantua stands to gain or lose, so she’d have something to review. Then she tells Ji-hye to send someone else tomorrow. After dropping Martina off, Ji-hye calls Eun-tae and apologizes for failing to impress her.

Seon-hyeok Squeezes Belmore While Hongsung Has a Leak

Meanwhile, over at the other side of this rivalry, Belmore department store’s executive director, Kim Soon-wook, calls Seon-hyeok and demands a 22% commission rate, higher than what they’d agreed on. Seon-hyeok has no choice but to say yes. He then tells Ms Joo, who defected from Hongsung, to find out what Hongsung is up to.

Back at Hongsung’s office, an employee named Joo-hee tells Jun-ho she’s anxious about the company’s future and asks what the plan is. He tells her something, but we, the audience, don’t get to hear it. Joo-hee then calls Ms Joo and says Hongsung is planning to work with Mantua. Ms Joo relays it to Seon-hyeok, who phones Sponza. Sponza insists he has no interest in the Chinese market.

The Morning After: Penalties, a Busy Cafe, and Commission Cuts

The next morning, the cafe owner tells Eun-tae he’s been busier than usual, a throwaway line that clearly leaves Eun-tae thinking. At work, penalty confirmations from the stores begin arriving. Over at CGM, Ms Joo hands Seon-hyeok a list of the stores that have paid their penalties, and he tells her to send those stores new contracts.

Then Kim Soon-wook gets a call: CGM is dropping his commission to 15%. He panics and rings Seon-hyeok, who explains that the cut applies only to Kim’s store, a response to how Kim behaved earlier. Seon-hyeok adds that CGM won’t cover the store’s penalty fees to Hongsung unless Kim signs the new contract.

The Article Drops: Hongsung and Mantua Go Public

At Hongsung, Eun-tae and Jun-ho sit down with Deputy Director Jang and Department Head Park. Jang calls a reporter and tells him to publish the article. Within moments, everyone is reading about Hongsung’s partnership with Mantua. Seon-hyeok is stunned, and a CGM executive yells at him over it.

The Flashbacks That Flip Everything

Here’s where the episode shows its hand. One flashback reveals that Jun-ho caught Joo-hee recording their conversation on her phone when she asked about Hongsung’s plan. He knew she was the mole all along. Another flashback takes us to the hotel drop-off, where Ji-hye politely told Martina that respect has to go both ways. Martina was impressed. She told Eun-tae she wanted to see whether Ji-hye could make a bad thing sound good, and then told him to prepare the contract.

Eun-tae also spoke with Sponza afterward, and Sponza agreed to lie to Seon-hyeok about the deal. In the present, Eun-tae, Jun-ho, Jang, and Park calmly sip their coffees while their phones light up with calls from the department store managers.

Epilogue: Director Gu Says No to CGM

The episode closes with Seon-hyeok meeting Hongsung’s executive director, Gu In-mok, and offering him a job at CGM. Gu agrees and tries to learn what CGM is planning, but Seon-hyeok calls him out for only pretending. When he asks why Gu is staying at Hongsung, Gu answers that he’s been with the company for 30 years and was there when it started. It was never about the money.

My Review: A Tense, Satisfying Penultimate Hour

The Ordinary Jackpot Episode 9 is a solid penultimate episode, and the tension rarely lets up. Everything hangs on whether Martina and Mantua will commit to Hongsung, and the show keeps that question alive right up until the articles go out. I genuinely wasn’t sure which way it would land.

What Works

  • The Martina and Ji-hye scenes. Ji-hye bends over backward to please while Martina picks apart everything she does. It’s well executed, and the payoff, Ji-hye holding her ground in her own quiet way, feels earned.
  • Martina as an opponent. Her haughty attitude gives Eun-tae and his team real resistance to push against, which keeps the stakes believable.
  • The Joo-hee reveal. Learning that Jun-ho caught her recording him is a great twist, and it recasts the whole second half. It also gives that unheard conversation from earlier a whole new meaning.
  • That final coffee scene. Four people sipping coffee while store managers call in a panic is the kind of image that sticks. It’s a perfect closing beat.

What Doesn’t

  • Martina’s explanation. She says she wanted to see whether Ji-hye could present something bad in a good way, and I’m still not sure why that matters for a deal between Mantua and Hongsung. The connection is unclear, and it’s the one moment that felt a bit thin to me.

Rating: 7.5/10

A tense, well-paced setup with a great twist and a memorable ending, held back slightly by one underexplained motive.
