If you thought you had Lila and Amisha figured out, episode 5 of Reacher season 4 is here to prove you dead wrong. “Bridge” is the episode where the show finally pulls the rug out from under us, and I’m still thinking about how casually it did it.
Reacher Slips the Net (Again)
Reacher Season 4 Episode 5 pick up right where things left off, with Reacher still stuck in that hotel suite standoff with the cops closing in. His escape route is about as glamorous as it gets: straight into the garbage chute. It’s not pretty, but a stroke of luck, someone tossing a black bag down right after him, is enough to keep him hidden long enough to slip away.
Once he’s out back and safe for a minute, Reacher calls Tamara, and this is where the episode really kicks into gear. He admits he’s had it backwards this whole time. Lila and Amisha weren’t victims being chased by dangerous men. They are the dangerous ones, and the “damsel in distress” act was exactly that: an act.
Tamara fills in the ugly details. It was Lila and Amisha who sliced up the attackers earlier in the season, and Tamara now believes they’re the ones who hired Mary Ellen to seduce Jacob’s nephew, only to kill her afterward and abduct Ben. That single revelation reframes so much of what’s come before. It also means Anna never would have mailed that thumb drive to Lila in the first place, not if she was actively trying to escape her. Which leaves only one other person Anna trusted enough to send it to: Jacob.
Of course, Reacher doesn’t get much time to sit with any of this. He’s captured again almost immediately and thrown behind bars.
Russell’s Digging Turns Up a Very Expensive Clue
While Reacher’s dealing with his own mess, Russell is doing what he does best: quietly pulling threads online. He discovers that Lila has essentially no digital footprint at all until a few weeks ago, when a platinum Amex card with a six-figure limit suddenly appeared attached to her name. She used it almost immediately to book first-class tickets from Indonesia to the US for herself, Amisha, and two bodyguards.
Here’s the part that really raises the stakes: there’s a fifth ticket, this one booked from Djibouti, for a flight that landed that very morning. The man on it is named Tomas Waberi, and given everything we now know about Lila, it’s safe to assume he wasn’t flown in for anything good.
The Bridge Standoff
Over at Jacob’s place, he finally gets his hands on that thumb drive, tucked into his postbox alongside a phone and a password. Before he can even process what he’s found, Lila and Amisha show up and open fire. What follows is a genuinely tense car chase that ends with Lila and Amisha’s vehicle crashing on a bridge.
Jacob wants to end this right there. He forces the pair out on foot, then puts his own car in reverse and drives it back along the bridge, aiming to take them out before police arrive. It doesn’t go as planned. He loses control and crashes just as the cops finally surround the area. With nowhere left to run, Lila and Amisha dive off the bridge into the water below and escape, leaving Jacob and the others to deal with the fallout.
Reacher’s Prison Visit and a Growing Body Count
Back behind bars, Shaun Docherty pays Reacher a visit, and he’s furious. He chews Reacher out for dragging Tamara into a mess this dangerous. Reacher, predictably, gives him nothing and curses him out right back. Meanwhile, out in the world, Lila and Amisha aren’t slowing down. They kill again and steal a car from an innocent bystander, proving they’re just as ruthless without a car to drive as they are behind the wheel of one.
Jacob and the others soon learn that Lila and Amisha survived the bridge, and they head to see Lieutenant Monty DeRosa, his father’s former partner, for help. What they get instead is a heated argument. Monty wants to bring the FBI in immediately. Jacob refuses, insisting the FBI is already tangled up in this cover-up and can’t be trusted with what he knows.
Reacher Breaks Out (Again) and the Thumb Drive Delivers Answers
Somehow, Reacher manages to escape his cell after a botched assassination attempt targets him behind bars. He reunites with Tamara, Jacob, and Russell, and the group steals a cop car before heading to Cyrus’s place to swap vehicles and lay low for a bit.
From there, they hole up in a hotel room to finally look at what’s on that thumb drive. At first, it seems disappointingly simple: just a single photo showing Sampson, Cahill, and General Putra together. But then Jacob manages to charge up Anna’s phone in the same room, and that’s where things get interesting. Her final texts were with a blocked number, almost certainly Lila, and in them she was sent an address in Philly the night she died. That address turns out to be an abandoned restaurant, the exact spot where she and Lila were supposed to meet.
That same restaurant, it turns out, is also where Ben was being held. Worse, he was forced to watch Mary Ellen get tortured there. Meanwhile, Reacher’s face is now all over the news; he’s officially Philly’s Most Wanted. Desperate for context, he calls Sampson directly, hoping for straight answers.
Looking closer at that photograph on the thumb drive, the group spots someone else in the frame: a scientist who, according to Sampson, was researching malaria. Sampson doesn’t have much more to offer than that, which only makes the mystery thicker.
The Chase Through Philly and a Knife at Jacob’s Throat
With Philly PD hunting him hard, Reacher decides to split the group up. Jacob and Russell head to the library to try to identify the scientist, while Reacher plans to let himself get arrested again, using Tamara to bring him in as a kind of controlled surrender.
Naturally, nothing goes according to plan. It’s all a ruse to get out of the hotel, but a chambermaid spots them and tips off the authorities right as they’re piling into their car, sparking another full-on chase through the city streets. It’s close more than once, but Reacher and Tamara eventually make it to the abandoned restaurant.
Once inside, they find blood on the floor where Ben was tortured, and Lila waiting in the doorway. She’s not there for pleasantries. She demands the thumb drive and reveals she’s already got Jacob, held at knifepoint, as leverage.
The Episode Review: Why “Bridge” Might Be Reacher’s Best Twist Yet
This episode earns its title. “Bridge” isn’t just about the literal standoff over the water; it’s a turning point for the entire season, and the show handles that pivot with real confidence. There’s a lot of ground to cover here, prison breaks, car chases, a betrayal reveal, and yet the pacing never feels rushed or overstuffed. That’s a genuinely tough balance to strike, and Reacher nails it.
The chase through the streets of Philly toward the end is easily the standout sequence of the episode. It’s shot with a real sense of urgency, all tight corners and close calls, and it does exactly what a good chase scene should: it makes you forget to breathe for a minute. Around that chase, the show is quietly dropping hints about the bigger picture, and I appreciated that it trusted the audience to keep up without over-explaining every clue.
The real gut-punch, though, is the Lila and Amisha reveal. For most of the season, the show has leaned hard into presenting them as women in danger, running from threats they didn’t ask for. Flipping that entirely, and doing it this late in the season, is a genuinely effective structural choice. It doesn’t just recontextualize their arc; it makes Anna’s earlier decisions, and the whole mystery of the thumb drive, click into place in a way that feels earned rather than convenient.
That said, the mystery is far from solved. Whoever this scientist studying malaria turns out to be, they’re clearly holding a piece of this puzzle that we haven’t been given yet. My gut says there’s more buried on that thumb drive than a single photograph, but I’ll admit that’s speculation on my part until the show tells us otherwise. Either way, that photo feels like it’s pointing toward something bigger than a single kidnapping plot.
By the time the credits roll, everything is balanced on a knife’s edge, quite literally, given where Jacob ends up. Reacher and his crew are running low on options, Lila has the upper hand for the first time in the season, and Ben’s fate is still very much up in the air. It’s a genuinely strong cliffhanger, and it’s going to be a long week waiting to see how the group claws their way out of this one.
