The Terminal List Season 2 Ending Explained - The Colonel, Reece’s Father, Freddy’s Killer & What Happens Next

James Reece finally got a pardon and a shot at surgery. He also got a new list, a dead friend and a family secret that is more than fifty years old. If you finished Episode 8 (“Fathers and Sons”) with questions about the Colonel, Thomas Reece’s watch and who is still out there, here is how everything fits together. For the full story leading up to it, start with our The Terminal List Season 2 recap.

Spoiler warning: this article explains the entire finale. The Terminal List Season 2 Ending Explained.

How does The Terminal List Season 2 end?

Reece says goodbye to Freddy Strain at an airbase in Odesa, gives Freddy’s journal to his wife Joanie and promises to find everyone responsible. The US government gives him a presidential pardon and offers surgery for his brain tumor. Reece and Raife Hastings work out that the Odesa assassination was a coup, then track Vasili Adrenov to a convoy near Kherson. Reece kills Adrenov with his hatchet after learning that the sniper who killed Freddy was actually meant for him. A month later at Langley, Reece learns the truth about his father, spots Oliver Grey wearing Thomas Reece’s watch in an old photo and puts his $4 million payout into a trust for Freddy’s son. Katie gives him her finished manuscript, and the season closes with Reece in an MRI machine while Grey settles into a new home in St. Petersburg.

Who was the mole?

Jules Landry. For several episodes the show points suspicion at Mo Farooq, but Mo tells Reece in Beirut that he has been working undercover for the CIA the whole time, on Landry’s orders. That includes the attack on the Morocco black site, which Landry used to convince everyone Mo had turned. Mo’s phone, full of messages between the two men, backs up his story. Landry later sells Mo out to al-Nawaz, escapes with a file for the next stage of the plan, and is eventually captured by Reece in Athens. He doesn’t survive the interrogation in Kurdistan, but he gives up the Odesa plot and Grey’s employer before he does.

Who is the Colonel?

The Colonel is Ivan Zarkov, a Russian ultranationalist tied to the Black Hundreds, a group determined to restore Russian power and bring down America. He recruited a young Oliver Grey back in 1997, and he has been working with corrupt intelligence officials ever since. His brother was Viktor Zarkov, and Viktor’s son is Vasili Adrenov, the charming oligarch who owned Voltstreem and brokered the peace summit.

What was the plan in Odesa?

It was a coup dressed up as a terrorist attack. Snipers Tariq Nizar and a Chechen named Tasho killed Russian President Drozdov during the peace summit, and Adrenov’s media outlets then spread the story that the American deep state and Ukraine were behind it. The goal was to destabilize Russia, restart the war in Ukraine and let Zarkov and his ultranationalists take power. Reece and Raife figure this out after realizing the attack team was positioned under the Russian delegation’s hotel, which means the Russian president, not the American one, was always the target.

Why did Freddy die, and who killed him?

Freddy was on the roof looking for snipers when he spotted the shipping container the shooters were using. He killed Tasho, but he and Nizar fired at the same moment, and Nizar’s shot got him. Nizar escaped and is still free at the end of the season. The finale adds a bitter twist: Adrenov says Freddy was never supposed to be the target. The sniper was meant to kill Reece.

Why did they want Reece dead?

Because of his father. In 1972, Thomas Reece killed two Russian military advisers working alongside the Viet Cong in Vietnam. One of them was Viktor Zarkov, the Colonel’s brother and Vasili’s father. Ivan Zarkov spent decades planning revenge, with the final goal of putting his nephew in power and making Thomas’s son watch. That is why Grey’s operation, and the weapons plot around it, kept circling back to Reece.

What really happened to Thomas Reece?

Reece always believed his father walked out on the family. In the finale, an intelligence officer at Langley shows him documents proving otherwise. Thomas kept working for the CIA and was assassinated in Buenos Aires in 1997. His name now sits on the agency’s memorial wall, right next to Freddy’s. Grey made numerous requests for files on Thomas, especially the 1972 Vietnam operation, which is how the connection came to light.

Why is Oliver Grey wearing Thomas Reece’s watch?

The show doesn’t say, and that is the point. In an old photograph, Grey is wearing Thomas’s watch, which suggests he knows far more about how Thomas died than anyone has admitted. Since the Colonel recruited Grey in 1997, the same year Thomas was killed, it’s hard not to wonder whether Grey was involved. The finale leaves that question open, and it gives Reece a very personal reason to keep going.

Does Vasili Adrenov die?

Yes. Reece catches up with him near Kherson after a messy helicopter assault and demands the sniper’s name. Adrenov refuses to give it and only reveals that Reece was the real target and that the motive goes back to his father. Reece kills him with his hatchet. It ends one part of the conspiracy, but it also means the one man who could explain everything is gone. Adrenov’s assistant Yana, who turned on him and helped Katie link him to Grey, survives.

What happens to Katie and her book?

Katie survives the shooting from Episode 4 and spends the finale recovering at home. She also finds out Voltstreem published an article under her name that she never wrote, pushing Adrenov’s false story about Drozdov’s death. In the end she finishes her manuscript about Reece but decides not to publish it. She gives it to him instead, goes back to field reporting and tells him to get his tumor treated. Several outlets have reported the book’s title as James Reece: Our True Believer.

Does Reece survive his brain tumor?

Not resolved yet, but the odds are better. Reece gets a presidential pardon and an offer of surgery, and in the final scene he goes through an MRI in preparation for the operation. We don’t see the surgery itself.

What happens to Mo Farooq?

Mo is cleared. After being branded a terrorist, he says goodbye to Reece and sets out to restore his reputation. He and Raife are both characters who could easily come back if the series continues.

Who is still out there?

Three people: Oliver Grey, Ivan Zarkov and the surviving sniper, Nizar. Reece also hasn’t forgotten the corrupt officials who helped them, and he’s starting what is effectively a brand-new list.

How does the ending compare to the book?

The season is adapted from Jack Carr’s second novel, True Believer, and the broad shape holds: Strain dies in Odesa at Nizar’s hands, and his son ends up with a trust fund paid for by the reward money. The show adds its own layers, especially the Black Hundreds angle and the long-running story about Reece’s father.

Is there a Season 3?

As of October 22, 2026, Prime Video has not announced a third season. The finale sets up an obvious next chapter: Grey in St. Petersburg, the Colonel still free and Reece with a list of names and a reason to hunt them.
