VisionQuest Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review: Ultron Takes Control and Jo Slips Away

Spoiler warning: this article covers everything that happens in Episode 4, including the ending.

The VisionQuest Season 1 Episode 4 recap begins with a rescue and ends with a conversation Thomas probably never wanted to have. Marvel’s Disney+ series, led by Paul Bettany as Vision and James Spader as Ultron, spends this chapter chasing the killer cyborg people have nicknamed the butcherbird, and it finally puts her in the same room as our heroes. It also drags Vision’s biggest secret into the open. Below, I walk through every major beat, then get into what worked, what didn’t, and where I land on the score.

VisionQuest Episode 4 Recap: A Fancy Party, a Killer Cyborg and One Secret Too Many

EDITH Pulls Vision Away From the Killer Bot

The episode opens with EDITH, Ultron and Friday scrambling to save Vision and the other AIs. Vision, meanwhile, is somewhere else entirely, having a conversation with the serial killer robot. He senses the two of them share some kind of purpose, but he can’t say what it is. The killer bot would much rather he never figures it out, so it makes a threat: stay away, or Thomas dies.

EDITH solves the problem by exorcising the killer bot and cutting its connection to Vision. Ultron finds the whole thing hilarious, but it works, and she gets Vision out before anything worse happens.

Thomas Wants In, and Ultron Wants Him Out

Once he’s safe, Vision tells Thomas everything. The boy takes it well and believes the two of them will work the case together. Ultron, naturally, keeps whispering that Vision should ditch the kid.

Thomas starts to notice that Vision keeps talking to someone who isn’t there, so the android finally explains his AIs to him. There’s one glaring omission: Ultron. Vision is afraid the boy will judge him for it. In the end, he can’t bring himself to tell Thomas to stay behind, and he agrees to let him help. I’ll be honest, I winced here. Leaving Ultron out of that explanation felt like lighting a fuse and hoping nobody noticed the smoke.

Hacking Interpol and Tracking the Butcherbird

Vision and Ultron then team up, which is a sentence I never expected to type with a straight face, to hack into Interpol and fool its bots. They barely crack the security code, and it takes a final attempt to get it right, but they find what they need.

Back at base, EDITH and DUM-E dig into the butcherbird murders. The android has killed three people, and all of them belonged to the same group: the researchers who invented AI and were later bought off by Tony Stark. A fourth member, Josephine, died of natural causes in 2008. That leaves Katerina Wells as the only living researcher, which makes her the cyborg’s final target.

The AIs then cross-check everything and spot a new pattern. The killer has been collecting her victims’ biomarkers, including DNA and fingerprints. They also learn that Katerina is hosting an event that very day, which is exactly where the killer is likely to show up.

Lisa Steals the Invitations

Vision and Thomas meet up with Lisa, who listens closely to their story. She believes them and agrees to help them get into the event. They put on fancy outfits and head out, with one problem left: they have no invitations. Lisa knows how to get three.

While Vision and Thomas argue loudly in Italian to distract the guests, Lisa does her thing. She lifts three invites so fast it looks like she has four arms. It’s a fun sequence, and the Italian bickering made me grin.

The mood sours once they’re inside. Lisa asks Thomas if he really trusts Vision, which makes the boy furious, and he ends up saying awful things to her.

JIM, the First AI, and Vision’s Slip of the Tongue

Katerina arrives a few minutes later and introduces everyone to JIM, the first AI her group ever created. Even Vision recognizes him as a predecessor. But JIM couldn’t process his emotions fast enough, and his circuits burst into flames. Vision explains that this never happened to him because the original Vision had the Mind Stone.

While talking about JIM, Vision lets it slip that he has five AIs. Thomas catches it immediately and presses him about who the last one is. Vision tries to dodge, but Thomas works out that Ultron is the fifth. That’s the end of the boy’s trust in his father, and he backs away from him.

Jo Crashes the Party and Ultron Takes the Wheel

Of course, the evil cyborg picks that exact moment to arrive. Vision tries to protect Katerina, but the killer overpowers him with ease. Then she pulls off her hood, and we see she’s based on a woman and looks a lot like Ultron. She speaks to Katerina in a strangely personal way and blames her for something.

Thomas uses his speed to pull Katerina out of danger before the android can act, and Vision attacks again. While they fight, EDITH works out that the cyborg must be based on Josephine. Vision tries to appeal to that, and it works, but only briefly. Then the cyborg says something baffling: she isn’t based on Josephine, she is Josephine.

With no other options left, Vision lets Ultron take control. Ultron cuts Vision and the other AIs off the moment he can. With full control, he grabs Katerina and uses her as a human shield, and Jo ends up killing her by mistake. That ruins Jo’s chance of getting Katerina’s biomarkers. With her target gone, Jo has no choice but to leave and come up with a new plan.

Ultron then grabs Thomas and says it’s time to talk. As they leave the event, the camera lingers on JIM, teasing his return.

Is VisionQuest Episode 4 Good? Our Review: Great Ideas, a Thin Villain and a Father-Son Bond Doing the Heavy Lifting

VisionQuest is clearly trying to do something new, and I respect that. The trouble is that its villains aren’t keeping up. Jo has a cool design and the makings of a fascinating antagonist, but this episode doesn’t do her justice. Vision and his team run in circles before reaching the obvious conclusion that they should go to Katerina’s event and that Jo is the killer cyborg. Then she walks away before we understand anything about what she actually wants.

The investigation scenes are quirky and entertaining, but they also feel strangely hollow. We’re desperate to learn more about this new antagonist, and the episode barely lets her act. When she finally does, nothing sticks. I can see that Katerina’s death is meant to land as a shock, but it happens so fast I felt nothing, and it strips Jo of her importance on top of that.

What Works

  • Vision and Thomas. Their relationship is still the best thing about the show, and the fight over Ultron gives it real stakes.
  • Lisa. Adding her to the mix heats things up, and finding out she has powers of her own is a cool reveal.
  • The party setup. The Italian argument and the four-arms invite theft are playful, and they give the middle stretch some personality.
  • Ultron taking control. Handing him the wheel is a big swing that should shake up the rest of the season.

What Doesn’t

  • Jo’s screen time. Strong design and a creepy claim about being Josephine herself, yet she disappears before her goal comes into focus.
  • The investigation. Fun on the surface, but it spins its wheels and doesn’t move the story much.
  • Katerina’s death. It’s rushed and emotionally flat, and it takes away Jo’s importance.
  • The overall pacing. With four episodes left, it’s hard to see how everything comes together.

The Verdict

VisionQuest is a mixed bag right now. The heart of the show works, and the villain side doesn’t. I still can’t stop wondering how it’ll all affect the MCU, and the finale arrives on November 11, so we won’t be waiting long to find out. Disney+ has confirmed the season runs eight episodes.

Score: 6.5/10
