Reacher season 4 episode 8 opens on the fallout of Sampson’s sacrifice and barely lets up from there. Amisha and Lila are still out there with a deadly toxin, Reacher knows he’ll take the blame if nobody stops them, and the whole finale runs like a countdown. Here’s my full episode recap, the ending explained, and my honest take on how the season wraps up.
Sampson’s Sacrifice Leaves Reacher Reeling
The episode picks up with Reacher stunned that Sampson has sacrificed himself. There’s no time to sit with that, though. Jacob and Tamara race in and pick him up before the guards can arrest him, which buys Reacher a little breathing room but not much else. Amisha and Lila are getting ready to hit another target, and Reacher knows exactly who gets the blame if the two of them aren’t stopped.
Elspeth isn’t waiting around for the dust to settle either. She’s determined to find out who killed Sampson, and she wants revenge for it.
Tomas Is All Over the News, and Plum Is Stuck in Bed
Footage of Tomas is plastered across the news, and Russell Plum recognizes the name immediately from the digging he did earlier in the investigation. The problem is that he’s handcuffed to a bed. I’ll admit there’s something almost painfully human about watching him tumble onto the floor just to get his hands on his phone. That scramble brings Docherty through the door, and he explains he’s on Jacob’s side. Plum passes along what he has on Tomas, and that information is what sends Reacher, Tamara and Jacob to their next stop.
A Sealed Drum and a Grim Discovery at the Warehouse
The trail leads to the warehouse Amisha and Lila were using earlier in the season. It’s been completely cleared out, save for one sealed drum with a dead kid inside. That’s the person they tested the toxin on. This is the moment the finale stopped feeling like a standard chase for me, because it makes the danger horribly concrete.
Reacher, Tamara and Jacob then work out that Amisha and Lila are doing exactly what they are: circling back to areas the police have already combed through. That points them to a vacant restaurant building.
Thunder, Surprise and a Building Full of Goons
Here’s the catch: the trio is vastly outnumbered, and there’s no hope of bringing in back-up. All they have is the element of surprise, so they use the sound of thunder to cover their approach. It’s a smart little touch, and it turns the weather into part of the plan.
A fight breaks out, as you’d expect. Reacher works to pull as many goons toward himself as he can, while Tamara and Jacob fight their own way through and manage to kill the chemist.
Meanwhile, Amisha and Lila call the last remaining goon in the lab and demand he grab whatever toxin he can, threatening his family if he doesn’t comply. He slips away with a vial. Jacob, for his part, is busy helping Tamara after she’s knocked back by a makeshift grenade. Amisha and Lila try to leave too, but not before killing their IT technician. Reacher takes out the final goons with a pretty gnarly elevator death (I winced, and I don’t wince easily), then turns his attention to the two women.
The clash between Reacher, Amisha and Lila is brutal. Reacher seemingly kills Amisha by throwing her out of a top-storey window, while Lila skips away before he can finish the job on her.
The Nightclub Race: One Vial, One Fog Machine
While Reacher deals with the girls, Tamara and Jacob sprint after the goon who took the vial. He’s headed for a busy nightclub, and he’s about to drop the toxin into the fog machine. They arrive just in time and shoot him in the head before he can open it. The toxin falls to the floor below and, thankfully, lands on the seats without opening. Tamara and Jacob breathe a sigh of relief and retrieve it. Honestly, my heart was in my throat until that vial hit the seats.
Are Amisha and Lila Dead? The Final Showdown Explained
Reacher has lost a lot of blood by this point, and he stumbles down the stairwell just as Lila finds a syringe of the toxin in the lab. She stalks him, ready to strike, but he manages to subdue her and stabs the syringe into her, killing Lila with her own toxin. It’s a grimly fitting end for her.
Reacher takes the drive from Lila and staggers outside, clearly running on fumes. Then Foster shows up and looks set to kill him. Just as it seems Reacher is done, Amisha appears (so much for that window), slits Foster’s throat, and moves to kill Reacher herself. Jacob turns up just in time and shoots her. He almost cuts her open with her own knife, but he stops himself, does the right thing, and decides to arrest her instead.
So who lives and who dies?
- Lila: killed by Reacher with her own toxin
- Amisha: thrown out a top-storey window, but she comes back, kills Foster, is shot by Jacob and ends up arrested
- Foster: throat slit by Amisha
- The chemist: killed by Tamara and Jacob
- The nightclub goon: shot in the head by Tamara and Jacob before he can release the toxin
- The IT technician: killed by Amisha and Lila
How Reacher Season 4 Ends: Hospital Beds, a Thumb Drive and a Sandwich
In the aftermath, Reacher gets patched up at the hospital. Tamara is there, and she explains that Elspeth has done a remarkable job covering everything up. Reacher’s name has been kept out of it entirely. The case has also left Tamara wanting to get back into proper policing.
Plum is in the hospital too, and Reacher goes over to see him and hands over the little white kitten. Reacher also decides Plum is the best person to handle the thumb drive, since he’s a journalist with the means to get the story out to the public.
Next, Reacher meets Elspeth, who’s looking to run for President in her husband’s place. He tells her the story is coming out and the drive is safe. Reacher believes she could be a great President, and then he decides to leave. He also makes good with Snap, Crackle and Pop, discovering their real names, before heading out to close ties with Jacob and Tamara.
The final scene is the one that stayed with me. Reacher rides the subway again and notices a homeless woman sitting alone. He walks over, shares his sandwich with her, and the two of them sit and eat in silence.
My Review: The Finale That Remembers What Makes Reacher Fun
Back to Basics, and Proud of It
The big Amisha and Lila storyline ends with a suitably dramatic showdown, and there’s plenty of action packed in along the way. More than most episodes this season, the finale gets back to basics and leans into what makes Reacher so entertaining in the first place. The action is well-shot, brutal and, at times, pretty gruesome. After a season heavy on plotting, it felt good to just watch Reacher work.
A Quiet Ending That Comes Full Circle
After spending the season tangled up in conspiracies, assassinations and chemical weapons, Reacher ends things by doing something simply kind for a complete stranger on the subway. I loved that. It brings everything full circle without a single line of speechifying, and it says more about him than any fight scene could.
Jacob and Tamara Get Real Closure
Jacob gets a satisfying resolution to his arc. After everything he’s been through, he chooses not to give in to mindless violence and upholds the law when it matters most. Tamara comes out of the case with a renewed enthusiasm for law enforcement, so both characters get a neat sense of closure. Neither arc ends in a blaze of glory, and I think that’s exactly why the payoff works.
A Season That Changed Shape
This season has felt very different from the ones before it, with a much greater emphasis on espionage, conspiracy and slow-burn mystery. For the most part, that change has worked reasonably well, even if there are moments where the story neutered Reacher slightly and pushed him further into the background than usual. Honestly, that’s the part I struggled with most.
The finale does a good job of correcting that balance. There’s plenty of action, the major storylines are wrapped up neatly, and the ending is satisfying without closing the door on whatever trouble Reacher inevitably walks into next.
